Operation Green Hunt is an attack on the poor and indigenous peoples of India to pave the way for the continouous displacement of millions of people to serve the comprador capitalists and their international backers from Britain and USA.
The United Nations has just condemned India for it's food policy whereby 30 million additional people have been made hungery since 1990's as a result of government policies and 46% of children are undernourished.
These are the realities of India's neo liberal policies exposed by the Indian Maoists.
We the Co-ordination Committeee of the Revolutionary Communists of Britain express our solidarity with Indian comrades in their battle for social justice and will do our best to let the whole world know the barbarities of the current ruling elite perpetrated against Indian peoples.
We will expose the false propaganda of neo-liberal India's so-called economic success, which is nothing but prosperity for the few and poverty for the many.

I've been posting news updates, pictures and video footage of the demonstrations in the thread that link goes to, I urge everyone to read it and appreciate the significance of what's happening.
The second day of protests has finished, the Maoists and their many supporters gheraoed local government offices across the country. All day, local govt administration work across the country was shut down. I've found video footage of the protests, so I urge you all to watch that. Plus a fair few new pictures. The protests look pretty chillax, lots of singing and dancing.
A very fucking significant event has taken place, which I'm sure more reports about are going to be written. In the Dhankuta Municipality, the Maoists have seized state power! MyRepublica reports that they "captured the keys of the office, evicted the government officials from the office and announced the formation of the [parallel govt] at municipal offices". The significance of this is just out of this world. Day two of the protests, and the Maoists have already mobilised tens of thousands of people and seized state power in at least one area! I'm posting the news reports I found about this, so read them carefully and appreciate how important this is.
Plus there's some new reports about how the govt's inability to pass the budget (due to Maoist CA members obstructing the parliament) is leading to a state financial crisis in Nepal. The govt is bankrupt. It will soon have no money for everything from prisons to hospitals, police to the upkeep of the PLA cantonments.
It's all very exciting and the brave people of Nepal need our solidarity and support. The reactionary army is still there and could still easily be called out. India will be keeping a close eye on the situation. The Nepali reactionaries could easily try and pull a Chile, or an Indonesia, on the Maoists and their supporters amongst the revolutionary workers and peasants of Nepal. It's up to us to do everything we can to oppose this, and keep informed about the situation (while also informing others!).
There are links to everything I mentioned plus more besides in the thread. I'd also urge people to visit www.mikeely.wordpress.com, where the events are also being covered in detail.
Lal salaam!

People's March, Voice of the Indian Revolution November 2009.pdf attachment
An open letter to all print and electronic media in portraying Maoist revolutionaries as Terrorists and NAXAL'S India's Taliban?
All sorts of criminal activities including murders and rapes which occur, including many carried out by fascist gangs organized by the big landlords, or even by the "security forces" themselves, are falsely blamed on the CPI(Maoist). One recent case in point is the Amousi Massacre
1.The Amousi Massacre — On or about Sept. 29, 2009, a criminal gang killed 16 people, including 5 children, in the village of Amousi (or Amausi, or Icharwa-Amousi) in Bihar's Khagaria District. This massacre was immediately blamed on the "Maoists" by the government and media. The articles below include just a few of the barrage of false accusations, and then a few articles with grudging admissions that later appeared which showed that the whole attribution of the crime to the CPI(Maoist) was a complete fabrication. Of course these eventual admissions received far less publicity than the initial lies, and moreover they also include new unsupported or false accusations!
- "India Must Check Maoist Menace", an editorial from the Gulf News, Oct. 2, 2009.
- "Maoist Rebels Kill 16 Villagers in Eastern India", AFP, Oct. 2, 2009.
- "Land Row Sparks Maoist Carnage in Bihar", Hindustan Times, Oct. 2, 2009.
- "Doesn't Look Like Our Op, Says Top Maoist", The Times of India, Oct. 4, 2009.
- Police Now Admit that Bihar Killers were Criminals, Not Maoists, Hindustan Times, Oct. 4, 2009.
- "Carnage is Work of Goons, says Naxalite", The Times of India, Oct. 6, 2009.
2.General Articles on Disinformation About the Indian Revolution and the Maoists
"PC [P. Chidambaram] Becomes the Flaming Arrowhead [against the Maoists], The Telegraph Oct. 11, 2009. This article speaks openly about the orchestration of a "gathering storm" of propaganda and psychological warfare in preparation for the launching of the military war against the Maoists.
This blame game propaganda & psychological warfare tactics against the Maoists by the government and the police were there on earlier occasions too whenever a Maoist leader was arrested are killed in `encounters' as claimed by the police. The arrest of Kobad Gandhy came to light only after three days on 21st September in print media. Then on it was the job of print & electronic media to drum-beat police version. After my arrest on 19th December 2007, Sessions court while dismissing my bail petition parroted the police version ….. if the confession of the petitioner as borne out by the case diary files was anything to go by, he was a life convict for having murdered his wife. This was drum-beated by the print & electronic media. The Hindu (India's National newspaper) dated 8th January,2008. (My wife is very well alive in Hyderabad)
From the beginning of the first week of October 2009 this blame game propaganda & psychological warfare tactics against the Maoists by the government and the police were further intensified after the alleged beheading of a police officer Francis Induwar in the print & electronic media by portraying NAXAL'S India's Taliban?
Dear pressmen & TV channel hoisters,
Aam aadhmi janthe hein ki "dho rupye ki moongpali bejkhar jeenewalon kho be ye khaki vardhiwale nahin chodthein, unse be dhus rupye lethein. Ye khakiardhiwale aam janata ke surakaksha ke liye nahin, balki hume thung karnewale hein".
General public knows very well that these men in khaki never leave even the people who make their livelihood by selling two rupees worth ground nut, take Rs 10/= from them too. They are not for our security; their only job was to harass the people.
You must ask yourself; or else conduct a survey on how many were able to digest your news and how many Indians are fond of policemen? From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, every Indian deeply mistrusts the average policeman. The average cop is corrupt. He is obese. He is insane with power…. In the eyes of the tribals who are fighting for their livelihood the police are nothing but terrorist in khaki; if one of them gets beheaded, they think it's no big deal. Such logic does not equate the Maoists with the Taliban as both their aims and ideologies differ. How can a Prime Minister of a `democratic' country say while dealing with Maoists there may be human rights violation? By such saying does he want the peoples' approval for the misdeeds of police? He knows very well that he won't able to tame the lawlessness of the police. One won't find a single Naxalite or a Maoist if the lawlessness of the Indian Police are tamed and made to serve the people honestly.
After the brutal torture and killing many a revolutionary leaders and cadres by capturing them from somewhere and killing them elsewhere in fake encounters and after a series of legal struggles by human rights activists the full bench of The AP High Court in its historic judgment made it mandatory for the police to file an FIR and register a case under Sec 302 of the IPC on every encounters by the police. It is for the police to prove in the court of law that they fired in self defense. Instead of the AP State government, The Police Officer's Association filed an appeal and stayed the operation of the judgment. In May 2009 Patel Sudhakar Reddy CCM of CPI (Maoists) was picked up from Nashik brutally tortured and killed in Warangal 800 KMs away in fake encounter. Human Rights activists probing fake encounters and police excesses were branded as Maoists with human rights mask. Many a human rights activists to name a few Dr. Ramanatam, Dr. Narayan, Purushottam. Azam Ali, Kalra, Parag Kumar Dass were murdered by the mercenary gangs of the state. Belly Lalitha a cultural activist's body was found in 17 pieces.
Justice AN Mulla has correctly said, "There is not a single lawless group in the whole of the country whose record of crimes comes anywhere near the record of that organized unit which is known as the Indian Police".
CPI (Maoist) party is the only party in Indian history that owned the responsibility of any of its acts and if any mistakes are committed by the party it apologized to the public. Before getting the version of the party on the incident, print & electronic media started portraying NAXAL'S India's Taliban?
In India more than 50% of the print and electronic media are owned either directly or indirectly by political parties. Another 40% are pressurized to toe the lines of the government in power. The remaining 10% who does a true and fair reporting faces the wrath of the government in power. Sakshi TV chaneel owned by YS Rajasekhara Reddy's son continued to mislead public by saying YSR's copter landed safely at Kurnool and the CM is safe till the evening. The other TV channels have no other option other than to follow. He owns a newspaper too in the name of Sakshi. Even Madhavan Nair's satellite was unable to track the debris of the copter.
The CPI (Maoists) has abducted many a policemen on earlier occasions and set them free un-harmed. It was during the period of blame game, propaganda & psychological warfare tactics against the Maoists by the government and the police the news regarding the alleged beheading of the police officer Francis Induwar broke out. The Maoist party to the alleged beheading of the police officer has not come out with its official version of the incident. There were conflicting reports both in print and electronic media regarding the demands put forth by Maoists for the release of abducted police officer. Home Minister P.Chidambaram saying that no demands were put forth by the Maoists. Jharkhand government (President's rule) rejecting the demands of the Maoists. Some media reported that the killing was done before putting forth the demands. Police officer Induwar's wife has gone on record by saying the government did not care for her husband's life for six days after the abduction. She further added that they searched AP Chief Minister's body within 24 hours. There were no communication between the Maoists and the government. The Maoists too learnt lessons from the arrest of Chatradar Mahato being arrested by policemen posing as journalists. Unlike the government they don't have prisons to hold the captives.
Like Francis Induwar many of those thousands of Sikhs burnt alive by Congress barbarians with tyres around their neck have wife and children. Many of those thousands of Muslims burnt alive by Modi's goons have wife and children. There are many untold stories of police atrocities. People of this country are aware of the misdeeds of politicians and the police. People of this country can not and won't digest your print & electronic media portraying Maoists as terrorists or NAXAL'S India's Taliban? As more and more people are being pushed towards Maoist politics due to failed democratic process and police repression all these 62 years of so-called Independence the anger expressed by Francis Induwar's son on the print and electronic media that he will join police and fight Maoists has no effect on general public. I too have three boys like Francis Induwar. If you approach my three children and reveal the story published in Mathrubhumi weekly dated 3rd February 2008 & Madhyamam weekly dated 10th March 2008 and if they come to know how their mother was brutally tortured in police custody they too like Francis Induwar's son say, We will leave our lurative jobs and join Maoists and kill hundreds of police officers". Will you air their anger and expressions in the print and against the politicians and the police.
The Maoists have not landed from some other planets or country to destroy India. They are part and parcel of Indian blood.
The arrest of comrade Kobad Ghandy is being touted as a big success of the Intelligence officials and media portraying him as terrorist. 3,000 years back Gautam Buddha left the kingly pleasures and said, Desire is the cause of all sufferings. Desire should be abolished". 150 years back Karl Marx came out with his scientific theory, "Private property is the cause of all sufferings. Private property should be abolished". For the people of this country Kobad Gandhy is a Buddha of modern age. He hails from a rich, elitist background. Interestingly was the class mate of Sanjay Gandhi at Doon school. Both the Gandhis went to London. One joined in Rolse Royse as apprentice. The other Gandhy at Oxford University. Both Gandhis returned to India. One Gandhy left his heavenly pleasures from a giant sea facing house in Worli, joined revolutionary politics and worked among the poorest of the poor (dalits & adivasis). The other Gandhi entered the daughters bedrooms of Army, Navy and Air Force Officers. This Gandhi entered the Doordarshan Kendra on 25th June 1975 with a video cassette of the film Bobby and asked the Director to broadcast Bobby canceling the scheduled programmes to prevent the people from attending JP's meeting. This Gandhi ordered PS Bhinder Police Commisioner to bulldoze Turkman Gate residents. This Gandhi under his five point programme forcible sterilization targeting Muslim population. The other Gandhy (Kobad) married Anuradha (An M Phil Sociologist) both leaving their heavenly life and worked among the poorest of the poor, dalits and adivais for their up-liftment. People close to him know that Anuradha wanted a child. But it was Kobad who was against this saying having a child will be an hindrance to revolutionary work. It was this Gandhi being portrayed as a big terrorist.
People's March thanks Shoma Chaudhury of `Tehelka' for the cover story "Weapons of Mass Destruction" dated 3rd October, 2009 in giving a diplomatic bashing for the `Times Now' TV anchor Arnab Goswami for his aggressive rhetoric against the Maoists and for the report.
People's March thanks Aditya Sinha Editer-in-chief of `The New Indian Express' for editorial "Cowboy and Red Indians" dated 10th October, 2009.
Dear journalists from print and electronic media,
"They can pluck and destroy all the flowers. They can't hold back the spring".
So carries my humble appeal to the print and electronic media not to succumb to pressures of the corrupt government and the police officers.

Civilian supremacy is the foremost important task!
October 21, 2009 by thippu
Comrade Basanta, Politburo member of United Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), gave an interview to Puthiya Jananayagam, during his recent visit to Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He delivered a lecture titled "Nepal's New Democratic Revolution: Opportunities and Challenges" in a hall meeting organized by Indo-Nepal People's Solidarity Forum, on 19-09-2009. The abridged version of the interview published in Puthiya Jananayagam(PUJA), Oct 2009 issue in Tamil is produced here.
Comrade Basanta
PUJA: Your party headed government has resigned citing the breach of civilian supremacy. Apart from resignation, is there any other alternative options discussed in your party? How do you justify the resignation as the only right option?
Basanta: First of all the question of civilian supremacy – I think it is a very important issue in Nepal. Because, in the history of our country, the army was under the monarchy, which was the enemy of our country. Even after monarchy was thrown, the Nepalese army has not come under the control of the elected government. The Nepalese democracy, which it says, was achieved at 1950 movement. Nepali congress got elected securing two third majority in the parliament. But later on king dissolved the parliament, sacked the government with the might of the army. If the army was under the control of the government, the army could not have been used to dissolve the parliament and sack the cabinet. For the second time it happened during the course of intensive people's war. There was a parliamentary body in the country. There was a people elected government. But, Gyanedra, the then king, who is deposed now, took help from the army, dissolved the parliament, and also sacked the elected government. Hence, just to ensure the democratic right of the Nepali people, the first and the foremost important thing has been to establish civilian supremacy in our country. There remains the importance of the question we had been raising.
We were an elected government and we were the largest party. We took the decision not to extend tenure of the existing military chief and to deploy another army chief in that place. But there were severe pressures from the external world, mainly from India – Indian ruling classes and U.S. imperialism, and the reactionaries all over the world. They were opposing this move. They did not want to bring about civilian supremacy in Nepal. Rather they propagated against us that Maoists are trying to impose their ideology in Nepal army. In this way they tried to provoke the masses while it was not the reality. We wanted at least to establish civilian supremacy in Nepal. But when there was a massive pressure on us, either we had to submit to the dictates or we had to resign. There was pressure from all over. We guess it's because we are fighting for the people, to establish for civilian supremacy and to establish democratic rights in the Nepalese society. Hence, we did not surrender to the external pressure. We thought, we should fight to establish this by remaining outside of the government. So we think it is a correct stand of our party to fight for the democratic rights.
PUJA: When your party signed Peace agreement and participated in C.A. Elections, the right wing opportunists like C.P.I., C.P.I (M) of India praised your turn saying that you realized armed struggle won't pay and so joined in the `democratic' mainstream. At the same time, Indian Maoists criticized you that Nepal Maoists had betrayed revolution. What is your reaction to these two views?
Basanta: Actually how we understand is, that C.P.I., C.P.I(M) in India and even the C.P.I( Maoist) have not understood the whole procedure of revolutionary course in Nepal. We are not practicing the revolutionary course just in traditional fashion. We don't think that, the traditional way of struggle alone will sharpen the revolution or make the revolution happen in the present context. Because, the objective situation in the world has been changing. We have to address the ongoing contradictions and conditions of the country and of the world. Hence, we have to develop our tactics accordingly, to accomplish the revolution in the present context.
What CPI and CPI(M) say is very much wrong. Whatever they may say, the reality is we have not abandoned revolution. We don't think that only armed way of struggle is the sole aspect of the revolution. Because, in a revolutionary process, armed struggle and other political struggles, various forms of struggles, should be integrated together. overall, it makes a revolutionary line.
But our going into this process, might be helpful for them. That's why they say that Moists in Nepal, are tired of armed struggle, thought armed struggle is not relevant and came to this type of politics. It is being propagated to the benefit of their own interest.
On the other side, the C.P.I( Maoist) comrades also have criticized us in these issues. But, we think that in the different stages we have to adopt different forms of struggle to lead the revolutionary war. When our people's war reached a certain stage, we saw a possibility that we could develop our revolution in a peaceful way to a certain extent. We try to utilize this situation to the need of our revolution. Hence, I think, C.P.I( Maoist) comrades didn't go to the depth of the tactics we have adopted and they criticize our way, in a kind of traditional manner.
PUJA: What are UCPN (M)'s plans and actions to break this current impasse and elevate the revolution to the next stage?
Basanta: Now we are in a peace process and we are trying to utilize this peace process to accomplish our revolution by writing the revolutionary, pro-people constitution in the constituent assembly. We are trying very much hard to write the constitution, so that the constitution can resolve the problems of the people and defend the sovereignty of our country. But fearing of increasing Maoist influence and our resolve for the revolutionary, pro-people constitution, reactionaries all over the world are trying to disrupt the process. Reactionaries all over the world are trying to dissolve the constituent assembly, to impose presidential rule and to revive the whole constitution. In this way they are trying to reverse this process. But we are very much struggling to establish the pro-people constitution in the constituent assembly and to lead the country forward.
If there is obstruction on the part of the reactionaries-(domestic and foreign) in this peaceful attempt of our party, then there is always the right on the part of the people to rebel against the enemies. So, if this peace process is disrupted on enemy side, then people will have every right to rebel against their disruption and the imposition of the presidential rule. In that case, our party will lead the Nepalese masses towards victory. Hence, in the first attempt we will try on our part, to write the constitution in the constituent assembly, but if there is obstruction, if they don't allow us to do that, then people will rise up and we will lead the people's uprising.
PUJA: Nepal is declared as a Federal Republic; But, UCPN (M) resolutely wants Nepal to be declared as people's Federal Democratic National Republic. Is it an addition of few words to Federal Republic or something more important in class perspective?
Basanta: Republic and People's Federal Republic…there is qualitative difference in class content. The Federal Republic achieved in Nepal now, is the Republic under the present context, or the present system, the same socio-economic condition. Feudalism still exists. Our country is still semi feudal and semi colonial. We want to transform this country from semi colonial to a sovereign country, from semi feudal to a democratic country. Hence, the present setup means, the federal democratic setup, is a reactionary setup. we want to go forward to change this democratic federal setup to a people's democratic setup. There is a qualitative difference between these two things and we want to establish a people's democratic, people's federal republic which will be an anti feudal and anti imperialist structure.
PUJA: The class character of the state has changed by overthrowing monarchy. But at the same time the fundamentals of the Nepalese society, i.e. the production relations has not changed. Can you explain this irony?
Basanta: The class struggle has changed by throwing out the monarchy? We don't agree with this. The same class composition is there. Feudalism is there, comprador bourgeoisie is there, bureaucratic capitalism is there; there has been no change in the class composition. But one thing is that, previously the king who was the main representative of feudalism, had been overthrown. The feudalism has become weak. This is true. Previously feudalism was in the whole of the state power, now the comprador bourgeoisie has come to the lead. That is the only change that has taken place through this process. This much of change alone cannot and will not bring about changes in the socio-economic relations in the country. No class has been overthrown. No class has taken power instead of others. Over all state structure and class setup has not yet changed. Hence, there is no question of the class relations being changed.
PUJA: The UCPN(M) insists for integrating red army with Royal Nepal army without any further delay. Your party has incorporated this condition in peace agreement also. What kind of integration is this? What are the benefits for your party and what the revolutionary masses are going to get through this integration?
Basanta: It is very much clear the whole setup, whole reactionary setup has been unable to address the interest of the masses, to resolve the problems of the country. That is, the revolutionary transformation of the society, new restructuring of the society including the whole bureaucracy, is required in our context. We want to restructure the whole state, the whole army, the bureaucracy and everything. Restructure to suit the need of the day. In the interim constitution, it has been agreed that the two armies, will be integrated to make a new army. We think that a new army should be built up from these two armies. They should be integrated, and it should be a national army which must be under the civilian control.
Other thing, we say that, huge number of army is not required in our context. We cannot fight any of the other countries around us with military. Neither we can have that military strength nor we will compete with their strength. Hence, how can we defend our sovereignty? In this situation, we have to train our people to defend our sovereignty by ourselves. In order to train the masses, we may agree for a small army, nearly some twenty thousands. Hence we say that let this army, this Nepal army, and the P.L.A., should not remain like this, but a separate army should be made by integrating the two armies to suit the exact number of our needs.
PUJA: Do Nepalese people (especially oppressed caste) see the Pashupathinath temple imbroglio as an important issue of national significance and a symbol of Indian Expansionism?
Basanta: First of all, Pashupathinath temple is a symbol of Hindu hegemony in Nepal. The oppressed caste people of Hinduism also get oppressed by the religious politics of Pashupathinath Temple. The oppressed caste people see how religion is being used for domination. At the same time, since Pasupathinath temple is in Nepal, why should an outsider be a priest? If Nepalese people want to appoint a Nepalese priest in a Nepalese temple, then it is the right of the Nepalese people to do that. Why should there be intervention from outside? Nepalese people including the oppressed castes, although they are oppressed by the same religion, think that it is our internal issue and there should be no outside intervention. Nepalese people should decide on who will be the priest. Hence, the kind of intervention that came from India was raised as a very big issue in Nepal. Nepalese people don't like this intervention and they oppose it.
PUJA: Indian media paint Nepal Maoists as India-baiters and pro-china. Does your party think `communist' china as a lesser evil than Indian Expansionism?
Basanta: We are an independent nation and we want to be independent. But India has been, Indian ruling classes – I mean – have been accusing Nepalese people as India-baiters and pro china. It is because Nepali people want to stand on their own feet which Indian ruling classes won't accept.
The Indian ruling classes want our Nepalese people to play in Indian hands. When they want to be independent from the Indian hands, then they blame us as sometimes pro-china, or sometimes pro I.S.I. or sometimes some other pros. They charge us, accuse us if we want to stand on our feet. It is their excuse to bring the Nepalese people under their control. We request the Indian masses not to get confused with this ill intended propaganda on the part of the Indian ruling classes. What we will strive for is that, we want to stand on our feet, and we want to maintain equal relation with India or china, or Pakistan or America.
PUJA: Why do India and U.S. give so much importance to Nepal's internal politics? What are their strategic plans with regard to Nepal?
Basanta: First of all, there is a question of ideology. In the present situation, ours is a party which is very much strong, leading a revolutionary war and showing an alternative for the oppressed people of the whole world. Hence, Indian and the American reactionaries, anti-people elements want to obstruct this revolutionary idea which is spreading from Nepal. This is one aspect.
The other aspect is, they want to keep Nepal under their control to play a game encircling mainly China. Since china is a competitive force, America is watching china very closely and wants to establish a base in Nepal to encircle China. Nepal is their strategic point from where, they can control China's activities. That's why they pay very much important attention to this question.

Nepal: The Tactic of General Insurrection
by Gary Leupp / November 2nd, 2009
[N]ow we are focusing on the mass movement… [N]ow we [can] really practice what we have been preaching. That means the fusion of the strategy of PPW [Protracted People's War] and the tactic of general insurrection. What we have been doing since 2005 is the path of preparation for general insurrection through our work in the urban areas and our participation in the coalition government.
– Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai, interview with the Britain-based World People's Resistance Movement, October 26, 2009
Today (November 1) Nepal's Maoists initiate, with torch rallies in Kathmandu, a mass movement to bring down the regime. This is the regime that succeeded the one their chair Prachanda headed as prime minister from August 2008 to May 2009–a compromise arrangement, always understood to be temporary and transitional, that collapsed when the Nepali Army refused to take orders from the Maoist prime minister.
Prime Minister Prachanda, noting the obvious (that the Maoists' suspension of the People's War and participation in parliamentary processes had not really given them state power), might have then ordered the resumption of the war. Instead, the first elected Maoist national leader made a surprising (I think even shrewdly Gandhian) move of resigning his post, while his party, the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) redoubled its efforts to organize support among the urban masses of Kathmandu.
The Maoists claimed that acquiring top posts in the government following the toppling of the monarchy in 2008 was less important than two other tasks: achieving goals in the composition of the new constitution and building that mass urban movement. The "Prachanda Path" has always been about combining Mao's theory of People's War (surrounding the cities from the countryside) with Lenin's model of the urban uprising—the October Revolution.
As of November 2005 the Maoists controlled about 80% of the country. They surrounded Kathmandu Valley but felt incapable of taking it militarily. Meanwhile King Gyanendra, deeply unpopular, had made himself even more widely despised by dissolving the parliament and arresting mainstream political leaders. The Maoists cut a deal with the legal political parties to coordinate actions to bring down the king. They agreed to eventually lay down their arms under UN supervision, in return for the other parties' acceptance of new elections for a Constituent Assembly to author a new constitution. In the April 2008 elections, Maoists won 220 of 575 seats in the assembly, double the figure of their nearest competitors. International observers such as Jimmy Carter verified that the elections were free and fair. There is no question the Maoists have a mass base.
And there's no question there are real limits to what you can accomplish following the normal rules. Hence "the tactic of general insurrection."
The U.S. State Department has always seen the Maoists as "terrorists" and even keeps them on the terror list now. That's not because they've used violence to overthrow a social order that inflicts misery in subtle and not so subtle, violent and not so violent ways every day as the Nepali state presides or looks on indifferently. "Terrorism" in the State Department's lexicon refers to anything that terrifies State Department officials, and the prospect of the red flag flying over Mt. Everest is one of their nightmares. But the fact is they do believe in the violent overthrow of oppressive institutions, they do believe the revolution isn't by any means over yet, and they do have a program for seizure of power through what Bhattarai terms "the tactic of general insurrection."
Knowing this, U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Kathmandu Jeffrey Moon called on Prachanda at his home in the city Oct. 28 to express U.S. concern about these upcoming protests. He was apparently told that the Maoists remain committed to the peace process and the drafting of a new constitution. But suspension of the guerrilla war is one thing. General insurrection centered in the city is another. And the People's War and the urban insurrection may connect at some point in the near future, just as the government of neighboring India undertakes an assault on the Maoist movement that has come to control vast regions of that county.
I have no idea what the outcome may be. But history is clearly not over, Communist movements are clearly not dead, and the ideal of classless society has clearly not vanished in societies where class oppression is most intense.

DAY ONE: Thousands upon thousands of Maoist cadres and revolutionary citizens carry flaming torches through the streets of Nepal, shouting "down with the puppet government" and "People's War continues!"
The video above of one of the torch rallies shows Prachanda (and about 50 enthusiastic helpers :P) lighting the first torch to herald the beginning of the Third People's Movement, Janaandolan III!

DAY TWO: Thousands upond thousands of Maoist cadres and revolutionary citizens surround and shut down local govt offices across Nepal. In Dhankuta, the Maoists seize control and declare their own govt!
[** MAOIST_REVOLUTION **] Maoists mass movement continues, needs our support
http://www.revleft. com/vb/events- quicken-conflict -t121184/ index2.html
I'd also urge people to visit www.mikeely. wordpress. com, where the events are also being covered in detail.
Lal salaam!

[** MAOIST_REVOLUTION **] Solidarity Statement with Indian Maoists - Revolutionary Communists of Britain
The Co-ordination Committee of the Revolutionary Communists of Britain calls for the immediate release of Kobad Ghandy,Ravi Sharma, Anuradha, Sri Chhatradhar Mahato,Raja Sarkhel and Prasun Chatterjee and all Maoist and other political prisoners in India.
