Poverty, ignorance leads to 1.6 million malnourished children

Poverty and a lack of women's maternal education is resulting in 40 percent of four million Indonesian infants, or about 1.6 million children, suffering through malnutrition.

According to medical experts, a lack of nutrition during pregnancy and within the first 360 weeks of life leads to growth deficiencies in children, which can also affect intelligence.

"The government should take care of these malnourished children. As of now the only center where malnourished children can recover is in Yogyakarta," said Nur Kholid Umam Kurniawan, a child specialist at PKU Muhammadiyah General Hospital in Yogyakarta, as quoted by tempo.co.

Nur said that there should be similar nutrition-recovery centers in every municipality or region. In addition, Nur said that there should also be community health centers (puskesmas) available in every district for pregnant women.

The government should work to educate women, considering that mothers who are ignorant about the need for proper nutrition are the leading cause of malnourishment, Nur said. (png)
