Call Today to Protect Social Security!

Take Action!

Today, Action Network members across the country join our coalition partners in a national call-in day to protect Social Security. As members of the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform meet this week to debate adoption of recommendations including deep cuts in Social Security benefits, it is critical that we send a clear message to legislators that cutting Social Security is not an acceptable course of action.

Social Security is much more than a retirement program – it is one of the most successful anti-poverty programs in our nation's history, providing benefits to many children, disabled workers, surviving spouses, and retirees. In particular, older women, who frequently don't have pensions or adequate savings and often outlive their spouses rely on Social Security benefits. In fact, without these benefits, nearly half of elderly women would fall into poverty.

Common-sense reforms and improvements to Social Security are needed, but these cannot be at the cost of the well-being of older citizens. In these tough economic times, cutting Social Security could be devastating to women and families across our nation. Now more than ever, these programs need to be protected.

Take Action!

Call your senators today (Tuesday, Nov. 30th) toll-free at 866/529-7630, and use the talking points provided to urge your Senators to oppose any cuts to Social Security benefits.

Help ensure that Social Security, a vital and integral part of our national safety net, remains intact for those who need it the most. Urge your senators to oppose any cuts to Social Security benefits!

After you are put through, be sure to tell the person who answers the phone the following. If you are directed to voicemail, leave a message:

  • Your name and address
  • That you are the Senator's constituent (and if applicable an AAUW member)
  • You are calling to urge the senator to oppose any cuts to Social Security benefits
  • Social Security is one of our nation's most successful anti-poverty programs, providing benefits to children, disabled workers, surviving spouses, and retirees
  • Because women often don't have access to pensions or adequate retirement savings, cuts to Social Security benefits would disproportionately impact older women – in fact, without these benefits, over half of older women would fall into poverty
  • Though common-sense reforms and improvements to Social Security are necessary, cutting benefits could be devastating to women and families across the nation
