Pentagon to treat cyberspace as operational domain 14 Jul 2011 Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn unveiled a new U.S. strategy on Thursday for protecting military computer networks, moving away from a passive defense toward treating cyberspace as an "operational domain" in which trained forces defend against attacks. Lynn, in a speech at the National Defense University at Fort McNair. He said as part of its active defenses, the Pentagon would introduce new operating concepts and capabilities on its networks, such as sensors, software and signatures to detect and stop malicious code before it affects U.S. operations.

 

24,000 Pentagon files stolen in major cyber breach, official says 14 Jul 2011 The Defense Department lost 24,000 files to "foreign intruders" in the spring in what appears to be one of the most damaging cyberattacks to date on the U.S. military, a top Pentagon official acknowledged Thursday. Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn III, who disclosed the March breach during a speech to roll out the Pentagon's new cyber strategy, said the files were taken from a defense contractor. He did not say who was believed to be behind the attack [*themselves*] or describe the nature of the files that were stolen.

 

UK Iraq Inquiry hears that spy agency cut corners 14 Jul 2011 A former British intelligence official said the country's spy agency cut corners while collecting evidence to back the government's case for the war in Iraq. The Iraq Inquiry headed by Sir John Chilcot on Thursday released an edited transcript of testimony from the former spy, whose name was not released. The ex-spy said his agency, MI6, validated intelligence that was later withdrawn after sources were deemed unreliable.

 

Suit: Blackwater may have overbilled government $300 million 14 Jul 2011 Two former Blackwater employees say they have new evidence that the company may have overbilled the federal government more than $300 million for 'security services' in Iraq and Afghanistan. They cite a report from an outside auditor who says Blackwater executives and State Department officials withheld critical information from him - including allegations of bribing foreign officials. The former employees are suing the Moyock, N.C.-based company, now known as Xe Services, for alleged contract fraud.

 

Five French Soldiers Killed in Taliban Ambush in Afghanistan 13 Jul 2011 Five French soldiers in Afghanistan were killed and four wounded by a suicide bomber who triggered a bomb near a convoy east of Kabul, the capital. An Afghan civilian also died and two were injured in the ambush in the town of Joybar in the Kapisa province, the French president's office said in an e-mailed statement today. Zabihullah Mujahed, a spokesman for the Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message to reporters.

 

International health organizations slam CIA's fake vaccination drive in Pakistan 14 Jul 2011 International health organizations have expressed concern that the Central Intelligence Agency's fake vaccination programme in Pakistan's Abbottabad town to obtain DNA evidence in the hunt for Al-Qaeda chief 'Osama bin Laden' could harm legitimate [sic] immunization programs in the country. Michael O'Brien, a spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Pakistan, said that the fake programme could make it more difficult for medical officials in other parts of the country to administer 'critical' vaccines. [In reality, *actual* vaccine programs by the pharma-terrorists/US government are more deadly than the CIA's fake drive.]

 

Israeli strike on southern Gaza injures 5 15 Jul 2011 Israeli warplanes have attacked southern part of the Gaza Strip, wounding at least five people, in their latest strike on the coastal sliver. The fresh offensive came only hours after Israeli Air Force F-16 fighter jets carried out five airstrikes against targets in the central and northern areas of Gaza. Similarly on Wednesday, Israeli warplanes pounded the tunnel network in Rafah, south of the enclave, claiming that Palestinian resistance fighters use the tunnels to smuggle in weapons.

Heavy explosions rock Yemen's Taizz 14 Jul 2011 Heavy explosions have been heard in the southwestern Yemeni city of Taizz, where demonstrators have held fresh rallies to protest against foreign meddling in the country. The protesters have condemned Saudi and American interference in Yemen, stressing that Saudi Arabia and the United States have no right to meddle in their country's internal affairs. Yemeni regime forces on Thursday opened fire on demonstrators holding a candlelit vigil to protest against regular blackouts, reports said.

Colombian colonel sentenced for faking civilian murders --Under US-backed ally, rightwing terrorist Alvaro Uribe, soldiers were rewarded with prestige and promotions according to the number of rebels [and civilians] they killed. 14 Jul 2011 A Colombian army colonel has admitted his unit murdered 57 civilians, then dressed them in uniforms and claimed they were rebels killed in combat. Colonel Luis Fernando Borja was sentenced to 21 years, reduced from 42 years for accepting responsibility. In a typical case in 2007, Borja admitted two men were lured to their deaths with supposed promises of work.

 

Health checks planned for Fukushima firefighters 15 Jul 2011 Firefighters exposed to radiation while taking part in a water-spraying mission at the troubled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant will become subjects of a long-term health survey, according to government sources. Health checks, conducted by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, will continue to be carried out on the firefighters even after they retire, a move aimed at easing health concerns among them and their families, the sources said.

 

Radioactive beef worries restaurants, shops 15 Jul 2011 Retailers and restaurant operators have voiced disappointment and frustration as they are believed to have unknowingly sold meat contaminated with radioactive cesium from Fukushima Prefecture. Man Pleads Not Guilty In Facebook Threat Against CT Governor 14 Jul 2011 A former New Britain police officer pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges stemming from his allegedly threatening comments about Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy ('D') on Facebook. Michael P. Adams, of Bristol, is charged with second-degree harassment, inciting injury and second-degree breach of peace. Adams, 36, was arrested after a business complained that he had posted a comment on its Facebook page saying he "hoped that Governor Malloy [would] be shot by an angry New Yorker during his visit to New York," according to the state police.

 

WikiLeaks files complaint over Visa and MasterCard 14 Jul 2011 WikiLeaks and the Icelandic IT company DataCell filed a formal complaint to the European Commission on Thursday, saying payment companies Visa Europe and MasterCard Inc violated EU antitrust laws by blocking donations. Visa Europe, which runs the largest card network in the European Union, and MasterCard blocked WikiLeaks from using its network to collect funds from donors in December 2010. The complaint, filed to the Directorate-General for Competition of the European Commission, says Visa and MasterCard breached antitrust provisions set out by Articles 101 and 102 of the EU Treaty.

FBI opens inquiry after report that News Corp. tried to hack phones of 9/11 victims 14 Jul 2011 The FBI has opened a preliminary inquiry into allegations that News Corp. employees sought to hack into the phones of victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and tried to bribe law enforcement officers for information, U.S. officials said Thursday. FBI agents are reviewing information on the phone-hacking scandal engulfing Rupert Murdoch's British media operations and trying to determine if U.S. laws were broken, the officials said. Murdoch is chairman and chief executive of News Corp., which is based in New York and has extensive U.S. operations.

 

Two Delta planes collide on Boston airport runway 14 Jul 2011 Two Delta Airlines passenger planes collided on the runway at Boston's Logan International Airport on Thursday, causing minor damage, an airport spokesman said. Delta flight 266, a Boeing 767 bound for Amsterdam, was being taxied onto the runway when its wing clipped the tail of Delta Connection flight 4904, a smaller regional jet bound for Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina. Logan spokesman Phil Orlandella said one passenger complained of a possible neck injury and was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

 

S&P warns of 1-in-2 chance of U.S. sovereign-ratings downgrade 14 Jul 2011 Standard & Poor's Ratings Services said late Thursday it has placed U.S. sovereign credit ratings on watch for possible downgrade, saying the action "signals our view that, owing to the dynamics of the political debate on the debt ceiling, there is at least a one-in-two likelihood that we could lower the long-term rating on the U.S. within the next 90 days." S&P had already lowered its outlook on the U.S. AAA long-term rating to negative in April, but since then "the political debate about the U.S.' fiscal stance and the related issue of the U.S. government debt ceiling has, in our view, only become more entangled," it said.

 

New backup plan would let Obama raise debt ceiling without congressional OK 15 Jul 2011 A plan by the Senate's two top leaders to allow President Obama to raise the debt limit without congressional approval is emerging as the most likely strategy to avoid a looming federal default. The plan being drafted by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada would lock in roughly $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction over the next ten years -- a figure considerably smaller than Republican leaders or President Obama had been seeking.

 

Polar bears revel in summer snow day at San Diego Zoo 14 Jul 2011 The polar bears at the San Diego Zoo got a very cool summer treat -- 18 tons of snow. The snow was brought into the Polar Bear Plunge exhibit Wednesday morning, and the three polar bears clearly loved it. Watch the video above to see just how much fun Chinook, Kalluk and Taqiq were having. "They came out the doors and, in natural bear behavior, began digging and rolling and playing in the snow," said JoAnne Simerson, a senior animal keeper at the San Diego Zoo. "They're like kids on Christmas morning. They're so excited and having so much fun." More than 90 individual donors raised more than $5,000 to spring for the snow. Simerson said it was "worth every penny."
