: A sense of relief underscored by admiration at the marvel of Indian democracy at work coursed through U.S' subcontinent watchers and many NRIs as Indian voters defied dark forebodings of instability and voted for a strong, stable government. Given the immense turmoil in all the countries surrounding India, news that voters acted with clarity and chose to strengthen the coalition in New Delhi rather than fracture it further was received with quiet satisfaction in various circles here. The Obama White House congratulated Indian voters and welcomed the dynamic process that has earned the world's admiration. ''By successfully completing the largest exercise of popular voting in the world, the elections have strengthened India's vibrant democracy and upheld the values of freedom and pluralism that make India an example for us all,'' Obama's spokesman Robert Gibbs said in a statement. ''President Obama looks forward to continuing to work with the Indian government to enhance the warm partnership between our two countries,'' the statement said. In particular, apprehensions that the US-India nuclear deal may be re-opened or derailed or scrapped had the Left parties gained ascendancy has been laid to rest. In a small way, the result is also a vindication of the UPA government's decision to press ahead with the deal in the face of opposition from the Left and the BJP. The NRI community, which had lobbied hard for the deal cutting across party loyalties, was particularly relieved at the results, especially the emergence of a strong center and the rewarding of a man universally hailed as a decent and principled head of government with a second term. ''The people of India could not have made a better choice than to strengthen the hands of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during these uncertain and difficult economic times,'' said Ashok Mago, Chairman of the USIndia Forum. Across the country, overseas Indians with strong interest and stake in India gathered for all-night parties to watch the live telecast of the counting and results. There were small celebrations as the results became evident a little past midnight on the US East Coast. At the suburban home of Ben Chikaswamy, a Washington area contractor, a dozen Indians, mostly from Karnataka, watched the election telecasts over a late night dinner, eagerly following the fortunes of two NRIs, Janardhan Swamy, the BJP candidate from Chitradurga who till recently was an engineer with Sun Microsystems in California (he won), and Krishna Byre Gowda, a former Maryland resident who was the Congress candidate from Bangalore South (he lost). At the diplomatic level, the return of the UPA Government means Washington is already up to speed with New Delhi's measured response to the crisis in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal, all of which has involved close US-India cooperation, instead of having to understand it engage anew had a new dispensation come to power in India. At a personnel level, although her position was never in any real danger, the return of the UPA means the certain continuation in Washington of Mrs Meera Shankar, who was posted here as the new ambassador only last month by the Singh government. The Obama administration can also press ahead with the posting of a new ambassador to New Delhi which has been on hold for some weeks now. On Saturday, the administration announced that the Governor of Utah, John Huntsman would be going to Beijing as its new envoy. Indian MPs' assets top Rs 3,000 crore 17 May 2009, 1814 hrs IST, PTI NEW DELHI: India is home to the largest number of poor in the world, but 543 MPs who have been elected to the Lok Sabha have a combined asset of Rs 3,075 crore. In a nation where over 28 crore people live below poverty line, the average asset of the MPs elected to the Lower House of Parliament works out to be over Rs five crore. According to UN estimates, 80 per cent of Indians live on less than two dollars (Rs 100) a day. Interestingly, the total asset size of the new MPs makes their congregation more valuable than a vast majority of the public companies in the country. There are close to 4,700 listed companies in India, out of which just about 150 companies have a market valuation of more than Rs 3,000 crore. According to the information furnished by the Election Commission, there are MPs who have zero asset to those who boast of property and cash of over Rs 100 crore each. There are an estimated 300 MPs with assets worth Rs one crore or more in the new Lok Sabha, which is nearly double from 154 in the 14th Lok Sabha. TDP's Namma Nageswara Rao, who has won the election from Khammam in Andhra Pradesh, leads the tally of MPs with assets worth about Rs 174 crore, followed by Congress leader and industrialist Naveen Jindal (s 131.07 crore). Jindal has won the election from Kurukshetra in Haryana for the second time. A total of four MPs have assets worth more than Rs 100 crore and include Congress' L Rajagopal in Andhra Pradesh and NCP's Padamsinha Bajirao Patil from Maharashtra. These are followed by NCP's Praful Patel (Rs 89.9 crore), Congress' G Vivekanand (Rs 72.9 crore), Congress' Y S Jaganmohan Reddy (Rs 72.8 crore), Congress' Rajkumar Ratna Singh (Rs 67.8 crore), Akali Dal's Harsimrat Kaur (Rs 60.3 crore) and NCP's Supriya Sule (Rs 50.4 crore). Besides, there are BSP's Surendra Singh Nagar (Rs 49.2 crore), BJP's Shivakumar Udasi (Rs 48.2 crore), Congress' Preneet Kaur (Rs 42.3 crore), Congress' Annu Tandon (Rs 42.1 crore), Congress' Rajamohan Reddy (Rs 36.3 crore), Congress' Priya Dutt (Rs 34.9 crore) and Congress' Kapil Sibal (Rs 31.9 crore). In terms of parties, Congress has as many as 138 crorepati MPs, followed by BJP's 58, SP's 14 and BSP's 13. Besides, there are 11 from DMK, nine from Shiv Sena, eight from JD(U), seven from NCP and six each from BJD and AITC. PTI
UPA's return to give push to financial sector reforms! The HINDUTVA UNITED ROCK Solid for NUCLEAR SUPER POWER HINDU INDIA! Financial sector reforms put on the backburner due to persistent opposition from the Left parties are likely to get a push in the coming "Reforms would certainly get a push," PFRDA Chairman D Swarup said. Pension, insurance and banking sector reforms are there before the government, he said, adding, it is up to the government to decide whether to take on reforms together or pursue them one by one. According to HDFC Chairman Deepak Parekh, "less dependence on allies will help to form a stable government...the continuity of UPA-government is expected to push economic reforms." The government needs to opt for disinvestment in those PSU companies where its holding is above 51 per cent as there is huge fiscal deficits, Parekh said. He added that the government should disinvest its equity in PSU entities and generate revenue, rather than going in for steep tax hikes. UTI AMC Chairman and Managing Director U K Sinha said, "I think it is a clear verdict for reforms." Financial sector reforms as well as disinvestment should take place, Sinha said, adding, it will be good for the sector and economy as a whole. Sinha said the coming Budget would highlight something to that effect. The new government, which would take oath this week, may re-introduce Forward Contracts (Regulation) Amendment Bill that would enable banks and mutual funds to invest in commodity markets. Indian Banks' Association Chief Executive K Ramakrishnan said the continuity of a stable government is good for the banking sector. Noting that the steps taken by the government to guard the economy in the face of the global financial meltdown have yielded results, he said the new government is expected to push reforms. "Various measures taken by the government to add stimulus to a sagging economy have yielded results. I expect further push in reforms in economy and in the banking sector," Ramakrishnan said. Even the insurance sector ecstatic as they feels that the new government could bring in legislation for raising FDI cap in the sector to 49 per cent, which is pending before Parliament. "We would expect the new government at the Centre to continue with the financial reforms to further liberalise the insurance sector," said MetLife India Insurance Managing Director Rajesh Relan. |
Maoists in Nepal not only caused the DEMISE of the Monarchy, but they also broke the High Caste hegemony affiliated to the Brahamins of this sub Continent!
Just take the case of UTTARAKHAND, where NDA rules. In Loksabha Elections NDA is wiped out and Congress sweeps. Our DSB friend, then a Maoist Ideologue, Pradip Tamta has won from the Almora SC seat. He landed in Congress via BSP immersing his college Time Ideology and commitment.
Just Remember how UTTARAKHAND separate state was CONSTITUTED by BJP led NDA with Jharkhand and CHHATTISHGARGH. I have earlier written about the HINDUISATION of nationalities and Identities. Latest case being Gorkhaland, where from BJP Stalwart JASWANT Singh of kandhar fame won the DARJILING Loksabha seat with highest margin in West Bengal.
Uttarakhand is also HINDUISED as CHHATTISHGARH and Jharkhand had been!
Uttarakhand was made separate sate in a FOLLOW UP to Anti Reservation movement as Majority of Uttarakhandi Hill Population is High caste and Uttarakhandi identity is Hinduised to dilute their Under Class Unified Himalayan nationality.
Uttarakhandi Caste Hindus mobilised and Swinged in favour of CONGRESS just to stop Mayawati becoming Prime Minister. CPIM Projection of prime Minister mayawati and Third Front Hype created Deliberately by Front line MEDIA so effectively, polarised the Caste Hindu VOTES swinging in favour of Congress as the Brahmins led by Baba Ramdev, RSS, Shankaracharya and a section of BJP leaders led by Brahmin Sushsma Swaraj rejected LK Adwani as PRIME MINISTER face! NDA was in no position to stop Mayawati. Hence, Caste Hindus POLARISED against Mayawati all over the country including South and North, East and West!
CORPORATES, Foreign agencies and Toilet Media with caste Hindu Intelligentsia and Civil societies Manipulated the MANDATE creating false Spirit to sustain the manusmrity RULE and BONDAGE of the Enslaved majority. Fascism and imperialism aligned to have a SOVEREIGN Market!
The strategic meeting, held at Seven Race Course Road, was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, her political secretary Ahmed Patel and Defence Minister A K Antony amongst others, party sources said.
It was the first high-level meeting in which the top Congress leadership discussed whether to take on board independents or parties of the Fourth Front like Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal to form the government.
The UPA is short of a dozen seats to reach the majority mark of 272 in Parliament.
Another meeting of the Congress Working Committee(CWC) is scheduled to take stock of the situation following the poll results.
The sources said that after the CWC meeting, Congress leadership would hold discussions with the allies to finalise the details of government formation.
Front line Media has GLAMORISED and GLORIFIED this VERDICT for Economic reforms and nation INDIA! I would quote some of them!
We all know PRABHASH Joshi, the ICONISED BRANDED Brahmin Gandhian journalist who is CREDITED to appoint and Promote all the BRAMINS IN EDITORIAL Job during his TENURE of EDITOR as well as RECRUITER!
Now Mr Joshi is Exposing the MEDIA Naked. Last week he wrote on PACKAGE, DEAL and RECHARGE for ELECTION coverage in his regular Sunday column in Jansatta. This week he has followed up with DETAILS how the MEDIA played VITAL Role to Manipulate the Peoples verdict in a MAJORITARIAN Electoral System, the by product of POONA PACT which made the ULTIMATE SPACE for the BRAHAMIN BANIA CORPORATE MNC BUILDER PROMOTER RAJ! MK Gandhi was the ARCHITECT of BRAHMIN BANIA raj discarding the Rajputs who still hold the Money and Muscle Power as well as they hold the GREATEST Chunk of land in this country.
We understand that the GANDHIANS have to say nothing against GANDHI and his BRAIN CHILD the BRAHMIN BANIA Raj or Manusmriti Hegemony.
But we must thank Mr JOSHI who exposes the SACRED COW, Indian media naked!
CPIM is in CRISIS. Bengal UNIT led by BUDDHADEB Bhattacharya and somnath chatterjee want his head as he is the Man who DECOUPLED the party with CONGRESS and the ROLE of MARXISTS and the LEFT since 1969 ENDED abruptly. Dange finished CPI aligning with INDIRA Gandhi. Jyoti Basu and Surjeet did the same thing in 1977 which continues until the famous withdrawal of support from the UPA. Polarisation of Hindutva in favour of CONGRESS made the Marxists IRRELEVANT in India POWER Politics and this INCIDENT made the MARKET SOVEREIGN with FREE HAND!
So Habitual COPULATION with Ruling Manusmriti Hegemony, Indian Marxists have forgot the language of Resistance and Mass MOVEMENT. trade UNIONS have been DISCREDITED as being the MAIN tool of SUBORDINATION, Enslavement and LPG MAFIA, Promoter BUILDER, MNC raj! Cadres has been REGIMENTED as GESTAPO. KISAN SABHA, boasting TWenty million Membership is INACTIVE since the TEBHAGA and FOOD Movement ended as the MARXISTS took over Writers Building and followed up with Genocides, Ethnic Cleansing and DEINDUSTRIALISATION running BLIND on the Super Highway of capitalism!
The move assumes significance in the wake of the Left Front's debacle in the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal. The politburo meeting has been convened to discuss the poll outcome.
Bhattacharjee is unlikely to attend the politburo meeting "as he has to oversee the law and order situation in the state after the announcement of Lok Sabha election results", sources close to the chief minister said on Sunday.
"Mostly due to the reason (law and order supervision) the CM is skipping the politburo meet to remain in the state," the sources said.
However, other politburo members from the state including Biman Bose and Nirupam Sen, would attend the meeting tomorrow, CPM sources said.
The HINDUTVA mobilised in favour of Congress, discarding NDA, stopping Mayawati and making MARKET SOVEREIGN! The INDIA INCS, won the SENSEX Fight for Manusmriti ZIONIST US Corporate Rule, the MEDIA has to dilute the TRUTH and the GANDHIANS are also used for SUBVERSION!
Do the Marxists or Maoists look beyond Bengal and India?
Thousands of Maoist supporters on Sunday took to streets to protest against what they alleged "foreign intervention" in Nepal's affairs and to oppose President Ram Baran Yadav's move to reinstate the army chief. All major roads in the capital Kathmandu were blocked as protesters gathered in the Tundikhel Open Ground for the rally, which came two weeks after Premier Prachanda resigned in the wake of the controversy over his sacking of army chief Gen Rukmangad Katawal.
Most of the schools and colleges remained closed and the Maoist leaders ordered their cadres to ferry students, workers and other activists to the venue for their protest show. Maoist Lawmakers have been blocking parliamentary proceedings for over a week now, asking the President to rectify his step of reinstating the army chief.
Buoyed by Congress' spectacular victory at the hustings, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, often the target of attack from the BJP, sought cooperation of the main opposition to open a "new chapter".
"We should open a new chapter in relations between the government and principal opposition party. We seek your cooperation," Singh told Leader of Opposition L K Advani who called to congratulate on him on UPA's victory.
PMO sources said that Advani telephoned the Prime Minister to congratulate him.
Advani, who was the prime ministerial candidate of the BJP, also greeted Congress chief Sonia Gandhi for the success in the elections and gave his good wishes.
Earlier, Singh giving his first reaction over the Congress victory, sought to reach out to the Left and other secular parties asking them to come together to provide a strong and stable government "forgetting their past disputes."
"I expect all secular parties to forget their past disputes and come together to give this country a strong, stable and purposeful government. We will work in a spirit of comradeship," he said with Sonia his side.
While the Politburo would meet tomorrow, the party has given up the idea of convening a Central Committee meeting.
The factors responsible for the massive rout are likely to come up for discussion in the CPI(M) body, the most important among them being the "failure" of the party's political organisation in the two states, party sources said.
The other issues could range from land acquisition for industries, corruption and infighting to national issues like forging of alliance with parties which do not matter much in the two states, they said.
The Forward Bloc's Central Secretariat would also meet here tomorrow while CPI's National Executive and National Council would hold their meetings from Tuesday. RSP leaders would also be meeting this week.
The four Left parties, which met here today, would review the poll reverses at their own meetings and then meet again to firm up a collective assessment on how to overcome the shortcomings and move ahead, they said.
While Chief Ministers of Kerala and Tripura, V S Achuthanandan and Manik Sarkar, would be attending the meeting, their West Bengal counterpart Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is likely to skip it on the grounds of the law and order situation in the state.
A number of post-poll clashes between Left and Trinamool supporters have occured in some parts of the state since the results were declared yesterday.
However, other Politburo members from West Bengal, including Biman Bose and Nirupam Sen, would attend.
Both Kerala and West Bengal face assembly elections in 2011 and the CPI(M) leadership would be pondering how to save these 'red citadels' from going to the hands of Congress and its allies. Left Front has been ruling Bengal for over three decades since it came to power in 1977.
The total tally of the four Left parties in Parliament has plummeted from 61 in 2004 to 24 this time round, with CPI(M) alone tumbling down from 43 seats in the 14th Lok Sabha to 16 now. CPI's strength has also fallen from ten to four and RSP and Forward Bloc from three each to two each.
Expressing gratitude to the electorate for again reposing confidence in the party in Lok Sabha poll, she said "the election is now behind us and hard work must begin. We can now start to restore the Congress party to its former historical role as the natural party of governance in India".
Addressing the Congress Working Committee meeting here, she said, referring to the impressive performance of Congress-led UPA in the elections, said "we meet at a moment of great significance and a time of great responsibility and of course great satisfaction".
She said that after many years Congress has emerged with a clear mandate.
"With our pre-poll allies, we have come close to achieving a majority in the Lok Sabha. We are grateful for the confidence that the people have once again reposed in us and we thank them," Gandhi said.
Congratulating party workers and appreciating their sincerity and dedication, she said the results would not have been possible without the hard work of the candidates and the party workers at all levels.
The 15th Lok Sabha will witness two mother-son duos of India's first political family representing two main political parties.
While Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul will be part of the ruling coalition, BJP leader Maneka Gandhi and her son Varun, the saffron party's latest firebrand discovery, will be seated on the Opposition benches.
This will be the first time four members of the family, albeit from its two estranged factions, will simultaneously be in the Lok Sabha that has for most part of its history seen at least one member of the Nehru-Gandhi clan.
The family debuted in parliament's lower house with the formidable Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, who occupied the seat from 1952 till the time of his death in 1964.
Nehru's son-in-law Feroz Gandhi gave him company for most of his years in the Lok Sabha. Gandhi, husband of Nehru's daughter Indira was an MP from Pratapgarh constituency in Uttar Pradesh from 1952 to 1960.
After a brief absence in the Parliament, the Nehru-Gandhi family returned to the Indian legislature with Indira, who was elected to the fourth Lok Sabha in 1967 from the constituency her husband had represented till the time of his death in 1960.
Sanjay Gandhi, the third generation of India's first family, entered the Parliament in 1977. Touted as a potential prime minister, Sanjay, however died an untimely death in an air crash.
His death, however, led his younger brother Rajiv, a reluctant politician, into the political arena. Rajiv was elected to the Lok Sabha in a by-election in 1981 and continued in the legislature till 1991, when he was assassinated.
Maneka, the estranged member of the family also entered the Parliament in 1989, elected from Pilibhit constituency representing Janata Dal party.
Rajiv's Italy-born wife Sonia, who stayed away from politics for as many as seven years following her husband's death, was the seventh member from the celebrated clan to enter the Parliament in 1999.
She was followed by son Rahul, now a potential future prime minister, who was elected from UP's Amethi seat, for the first time in 2004.
Maneka's son Varun, the youngest, the latest and the most controversial Gandhi family entrant to the Parliament has made his debut in the Lok Sabha with his first victory from Pilibhit constituency in this elections.
Pranab calls for restraint in West Bengal
Kolkata (PTI) With stray incidents of post poll clashes reported from Birbhum, Murshidabad and East Midnapore districts in West Bengal, WBPCC chief Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday appealed for restraint.
"My appeal to all political parties and workers is that they should not do anything to create tension and instead work for lessening it," Mr. Mukherjee, who arrived here from his constituency Jangipur after his re-election to the Lok Sabha, said.
To a question, he said that the his party's alliance with the Trinamool Congress was in accordance with the "desire" of the people of the state.
Mr. Mukherjee said he was in a hurry to leave for Delhi where the Congress Core committee and Working Committee would meet for post-poll review.

Sonia calls up Lalu, asks him to attend cabinet meeting
Patna In an apparent bid to reach out to her estranged ally, Congress President Sonia Gandhi telephoned Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and asked him to attend the Cabinet meeting scheduled for Monday.
"UPA chairperson rang up the Railway Minister on Saturday evening and requested him to attend a meeting of the union Cabinet on Monday," his private secretary Bhola Yadav said on Sunday.
He, however, did not divulge what transpired during the telephonic talk between the two leaders coming in the backdrop of severe drubbing of RJD-LJP led Fourth Front had inBihar.
The Railway Minister, he said, is scheduled to leave for Delhi later in the day.
Lalu has not been attending cabinet meetings ever since he forged an alliance with LJP and Samajwadi Party.
An apparently contrite Lalu, Congress' largest ally in the outgoing Lok Sabha, had yesterday admitted that not contesting the elections in alliance with the Congress was a big mistake.
"The decision to contest elections without the Congress on our side was a big mistake and I acknowledge it.
However, it is a matter of great happiness for me that the Congress-led UPA is all set to form its government at the Centre," he had said.
Swaraj rules out being in race to become Leader of Opposition
Bhopal Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj on Sunday ruled out being in the race for the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
"It is not possible for me to think of becoming Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha in the presence of L K Advani in the house. I just can't think of it and it is very painful for me to think so," Swaraj told reporters at Raisen district collectorate here.
She was responding to a query about reports that she is in the race for the post of the Leader of Opposition.
Swaraj, who won Vidisha Lok Sabha seat with a record margin of votes in the absence of any Congress candidate, had come to the collectorate to collect her winning certificate.
Swaraj's name was reportedly among the prospective candidates being considered for the post of Leader of Opposition after Advani declined to lead the Opposition in 15th Lok Sabha.
Too soon for yet more troops in Afghanistan: Obama
In an interview with Newsweek magazine, Obama said the hardest thing he has had to do so far in his administration was to order 17,000 troops to Afghanistan on top of an estimated 38,000 that were already in Afghanistan. The interview was released on the Web on Saturday.
He did not rule out the possibility of sending even more troops, while stressing such a decision was premature at this point and that US military action is not the only answer to bringing stability to the region.
"We have to see our military action in the context of a broader effort to stabilize security in the country, allow national elections to take place in Afghanistan and then provide the space for the vital development work that's needed so that a tolerant and open, democratically elected government is considered far more legitimate than a Taliban alternative," Obama said.
"My strong view is that we are not going to succeed simply by piling on more and more troops," he added. "The military component is critical to accomplishing that goal, but it is not a sufficient element by itself."
Obama said he wrestled with his options before making the decision in February to order a surge of troops. He said he was sobered by the idea that many men and women could be harmed but that a surge was unavoidable.
"The starting point was a recognition that the existing trajectory was not working, that the Taliban had made advances, that our presence in Afghanistan was declining in popularity, that the instability along the border region was destabilizing Pakistan as well," Obama said.

However, he parried questions on his joining the Cabinet which the Prime Minister had earlier in the day said he would like. ( Watch )
At an impromtu interaction with the media here, Rahul complimented BJP leader L K Advani on giving a "strong fight" in the Lok Sabha polls but said he differed fundamentally with his politics of "changing the secular traditions".
"This election is a testament of the fact that the youth of the country wants unification and believes in clean and honest politics that is what Manmohan Singh embodies," Rahul said.
He said he was happy that the "young and poor people" of the country have given the mandate.
Asked whether he would join the Cabinet, Rahul said: he has a job to help the youth of the country.
"I want to say that youth should come to politics and should change the way the present politics functions. I have got a job to do to help youth of this country," he said.
To a question whether his party got more seats because of his efforts, Rahul said: "People of Uttar Pradesh have rejected the politics of caste and religion and voted for development."
Asked whether the credit for party's victory should go to him, he pointed to his sister Priyanka standing by his side who said the full credit should go to Rahul.
However, he added that "One cannot do it on his own. If one has to achieve anything in life it has to be a team effort. Team work is important. The 100 per cent goes to our team."
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi retained the Amethi seat defeating his nearest rival BSP candidate Ashish Shukla by a margin of over 3.7 lakh votes by
Rahul Gandhi secured 4,64,195 votes while BSP candidate Shukla polled 93,997 votes.

UPA won most seats from states of Third Front partners 16 May 2009, 2131 hrs IST, IANS NEW DELHI: The bulk of seats in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance's stunning victory came mostly from the states where the Third Front partners had expected to do well and play kingmakers. The Congress gained mostly in the Left-ruled West Bengal and Kerala, Tamil Nadu where AIADMK-led grouping was hoping to do good, Andhra Pradesh where grand alliance of Telugu Desam Party's Chandrababu Naidu was expecting to cash in on an anti-incumbency factor and Uttar Pradesh where Bahujan Samaj Party's Mayawati was hoping to carry on her landslide victory in last assembly elections. The performance in Rajasthan, where the Congress bagged 19 out of the 25 seats, is in continuation of its victory in the November-December assembly elections. In West Bengal, the Congress in a strategic tie-up with Trinamool Congress' Mamata Banerjee humbled the Left front picking 25 out of total 42 seats. The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has been ruling the state for the last three decades. In Kerala, the home state of CPM general secretary Prakash Karat, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) took 16 out of 20 seats. Many attribute this victory to the rumblings among factions led by senior communist leaders, chief minister VS Achuthanandan and Pinayari Vijayan supported by Karat. The incredible victory in Uttar Pradesh, where it was virtually non-existent with only nine MPs out of the total 80, the Congress won 21 seats and shocked the powerful regional satraps Mayawati and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. "It was clearly the anti-incumbency against the Mayawati government and disillusionment with the Samajwadi Party of whose rule the state has no fond memories," says political analyst and Uttar Pradesh expert Sudha Pai. "Another reason is the focussed party building work that Rahul Gandhi did in the state; after long, the party was trying real hard and it paid off," she said. In Tamil Nadu, all the parties sympathetic to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had to bite the dust as the UPA managed 28 out of 40 seats. Similarly, in Andhra Pradesh it walked with 32 out of 42 seats. The party's performance in rural Andhra Pradesh areas is being attributed to its implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) where the Youth Congress members continuously monitored the scheme. The Congress also retained its rule in Andhra Pradesh. Related Stories |
Projection of Modi caused immense harm to NDA: Sharad YadavNEW DELHI: After the stunning defeat of NDA in Lok Sabha polls, knives were out with its convener Sharad Yadav holding that Varun Gandhi's "hate "It may be right or wrong or he (Varun's) might have denied but his statement has caused immense damage. His statement was unconstitutional. It was against the country's unity and must have affected the polls," Yadav told reporters. Asked whether references that Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi could be a future Prime Ministerial candidate had affected the prospects of NDA, Yadav, who is also JD(U) president, said the eruption of the issue in deed had confused the people. "It was a factor. When the issue had come up, it created confusion among the people's mind. Since the NDA had already declared a Prime Ministerial candidate (LK Advani) unanimously, the issue should have been dismissed immediately," he said. Yadav said such an issue (Prime Ministerial candidate) had come up in JD(U) too during the electioneering, but the party summarily rejected. Asked whether Gujarat riots too had affected the NDA's prospects, Yadav said such issues do have impact on polls. "As far as Godhra is concerned, we have contested four elections after that. Whatever had happened in Godhra and after Godhra were inhuman. So, such incidents do have affect." |

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan troops on Sunday swept across a tiny patch of land still held by the LTTE after killing at least 70 rebels, including two of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who cut short his visit to Jordan, declared that the guerrillas had been defeated militarily as authorities announced that the last among the remaining 50,000 civilians had fled the conflict zone. The government also denied reports of the death of the LTTE supremo Prabhakaran and said Rajapaksa would make a nationally-televised address from Parliament on Tuesday to give an update on the war. "We do not have any reports of Prabhakaran's death and such reports are not true. Even the stories on the (recovery of) burnt LTTE bodies is incorrect," Minister for Mass Media and Information, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, told PTI. In the face of a major offensive by the Sri lankan military, the Tigers admitted defeat saying they had decided to "silence" their guns. They claimed they had done this to ensure the safety of Tamil civilians. |
