60 MLAs resign over AP split
AP plunged into a fresh political turmoil as 60 MLAs resigned in protest against the decision to carve out a Telangana state. More

Gorkha Janamukti Morcha workers have threatened to fast unto death and have called a 96-hour bandh in Darjeeling.
Obama defends war at Nobel ceremony
President Barack Obama has said the US must uphold moral standards when waging wars that are necessary and justified, as he accepted his Nobel Peace Prize.
In his speech in Oslo, he defended the US role in Afghanistan, arguing the use of force could bring lasting peace.
He also said his accomplishments were slight compared to previous laureates.
Mr Obama was given the prize in October for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".
Thursday's ceremony in the Norwegian capital came days after Mr Obama announced he was sending 30,000 extra US soldiers to the war in Afghanistan.
'Far more deserving'
There was a mixed reaction when he was named as the winner of this year's prize - only the fourth US president in history to be given the honour.
A non-violent movement could not have halted Hitler's armies - negotiations cannot convince al-Qaeda's leaders to lay down their arms Barack Obama |
Mr Obama's elevation to the rank of fellow laureates such as Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King, before he has even spent a year in office, has sparked fierce debate.
Critics also said it was inappropriate for the honour to go to the commander-in-chief of a country involved in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Acknowledging the controversy, Mr Obama began by saying: "Compared to some of the giants of history who have received this prize... my accomplishments are slight."
He could not argue with those who said many previous laureates were "far more deserving" of the honour than him, he said.
Defending his Afghan troop deployment, Mr Obama said: "There will be times when nations - acting individually or in concert - will find the use of force not only necessary but morally justified."
He said "instruments of war do have a role to play in preserving the peace".
"A non-violent movement could not have halted Hitler's armies," he added. "Negotiations cannot convince al-Qaeda's leaders to lay down their arms."
Protests
He said the US "must remain a standard bearer in the conduct of war" to differentiate it from "a vicious adversary that abides by no rules".
The Obamas met Norway's King Harald at the Royal Castle in Oslo |
This belief had led him to order the closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison and reaffirm US commitment to abide by the Geneva Conventions, he added.
While Russia and America worked to reduce their nuclear stockpiles, he said the international community must also ensure nations like Iran and North Korea did not "game the system".
Mr Obama also paid tribute to anti-government demonstrators in Iran, Burma and Zimbabwe, and said the US would always stand on the side of those who sought freedom.
Amid high security, the US president earlier signed the Nobel Prize book of previous laureates after arriving in Oslo with his wife, Michelle.
There has also been criticism because he did not have lunch with the king and queen, and he is staying in Norway only one day, even though Nobel ceremonies are usually held over three.
At a news conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, Mr Obama said he and his wife wished they could stay longer.
|
Anti-war demonstrators gathered outside city hall, where the ceremony was held.
"We are protesting against him because... we don't think he is a man of peace," one protester, Anna Carraro, told AFP news agency.
The Nobel Prizes for chemistry, literature, medicine, physics and economics will also be presented in the Swedish capital Stockholm.
Each laureate receives a diploma, a medal and 10m Krona ($1.4m; £865,000), which is shared by joint winners.
Coinciding with the Nobel ceremony, a statue of Mr Obama as a young boy was unveiled in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, at a park, near where the president lived between 1967 and 1971.

Andhra bifurcation: 60 MLAs, 1 MP resign; Cong on back foot
Thu, Dec 10 04:21 PM
Andhra Pradesh plunged into a fresh political crisis on Thursday with 60 MLAs and a MP belonging to Congress, TDP and PRP from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions resigning in protest against the Centre's decision to carve out a separate Telangana state.
The legislators submitted their resignation to Assembly Speaker Kiran Kumar Reddy, a day after the Centre announced that steps will be initiated for the formation of Telangana state.
However, there was no word from the Speaker's office about acceptance of their resignations.
Thirty-two of the MLAs who have resigned are from Congress, 17 from the Telugu Desam Party and nine from the Praja Rajyam Party. In New Delhi, Congress MP from Vijayawada Lagadapati Rajagopal submitted his resignation to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.
As reports emerged that more MPs from the Andhra region are planning to resign to register their protest, Congress President Sonia Gandhi convened a meeting of party MPs from the state to discuss the issue in New Delhi.
The MLAs have strongly decried the Congress high command's "unilateral decision" to initiate the process for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
"This decision is very painful for us. Lakhs of people from other regions of the state have come to Hyderabad in search of livelihood. What would be their fate if the state is split," P Venkatramaya, a Congress legislator from Krishna district, said in the Assembly.
Strongly criticising the Centre and Sonia Gandhi for the decision on Telangana, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu accused them of taking such a step without taking into confidence the Opposition parties and other stakeholders.
While Telangana accounts for 119 seats out of the 294 assembly seats and 17 Lok Sabha segments, the rest of Andhra Pradesh has 175 assembly seats and 25 Lok Sabha constituencies.
Of the 158 Congress MLAs, 51 are from the Telangana region and 107 are from the coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions.
Telugu Desam MLA P Raghunatha Reddy said that they resigned from their posts as the Congress took a unilateral decision to move a motion in the state assembly for the formation of Telangana State.
In New Delhi, another Congress MP Anantha Venkatarami Reddy threatened to resign in protest against the decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh.
In Parliament, Home Minister P Chidambaram said he had spoken to TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao, who had last night ended his 11-day-old fast-unto-death after the Centre's decision, and that he has invited him for talks.
Leader of Lok Sabha and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said all processes regarding the formation of Telangana will be "fully followed".
Telangana to become the 29th state
Thu, Dec 10 11:34 AM
Hyderabad, Dec 10 (PTI) The decision to carve out a separate state of Telangana, which will take the total number of states in the Union to 29, comes at the end of a 40-year- old struggle for a distinct identity. This comes after a gap of nine years when three new states were carved out. Jharkhand split from Bihar on November 15, 2000 to become the 28th state while Uttarakhand split from UP on November 9 and Chattisgarh was created on November one the same year.
Andhra Pradesh has 23 districts, including the state capital Hyderabad, in three regions coastal Andhra (nine), Rayalaseema (four) and Telangana (ten).
Since its inception in 2001, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has been fighting for creation of a separate Telangana state. Telangana region now accounts for 119 of the 294 seats in the Assembly and 17 of the 42 Lok Sabha members. Telangan region comprises Hyderabad, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Medak, Warangal, Rangareddy, Nalgonda, Khammam and Mahbubnagar.
The demand for a separate state began in 1969 but the Congress then had stoutly opposed any move for additional linguistic states. Disillusioned by it, firebrand Congress leader M Channa Reddy broke away and formed the Telangana Praja Samithi (Telangan Popular Association) in 1969. The first movement of a separate Telangana state started met with a gory end in 1971. As a counter, the "Jai Andhra" agitation was taken up in 1972-73.
Majlis not against Telangana
--Thu, Dec 10 07:08 PM
Hyderabad, Dec 10 (PTI) The All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimin (MIM) today said it was not opposed to Telangana state in principle but was concerned about the status of the community when the new state is formed. "In principle, we are not opposed to Telangana state.
But we are concerned for Muslims status in the future", a party spokesman told PTI here. "We want to be on the negotiable table so that the Muslim minority status has to be protected as and when the state is formed," the spokesman said adding there is a need for a constitutional guarantee to minority community while carving out the state.
"Hyderabad has a strategic importance for Muslims and the Majlis has done a lot for uplifting of the community during the last five decades and the community contributed significantly to the state exchequer," the spokesman added. Meanwhile, the Jamaat-E-Islami Hind also welcomed the decision of carving out a separate Telangana state.
In a statement issued here, the Jamaat said this decision would go a long way in fulfilling the aspirations of people of Telangana region.
