Urgent Appeal
We the undersigned protest the unlawful detention of social activist Kopa Kunjam and advocate Alban Topo by the Dantewada police at about 6 p m on 10th of December. The police apparently came and sought to whisk away Kopa without complying with the D K basu guidelines of the Supreme Court. Kopa was not informed as to why he was being taken away at night in a police vehicle. He was not told where he was being taken. When a young lawyer, working on the right to food case in the Supreme Court who was visiting Dantewada, told the police that he wanted to accompany Kopa to the police station, he too was bundled into the police vehicle and taken away. Attempts to follow the police vehicle failed and the two of them were taken away into the night. No one knows where they are now.
The Supreme Court held in D K Basu's case that anyone being arrested has to be informed of the grounds of arrest and his next of kin has to be informed as to where he is being taken. The lawyer has a right to accompany the arrested person to the police station. To intimidate the advocates in this fashion is gross contempt of court. Apparently his phone has been snatched by the police. We demand immediate release of Kopa and advocate Alban Topo.

"I have never claimed to be a universal leader of suffering humanity. The problem of the untouchables is quite enough for my slender strength. I do not say that other causes are not equally noble. But knowing that life is short, one can only serve one cause and I have never aspired to do more than serve the Untouchables." Bodhisatta Babasaheb B.R.Ambedkar
"The basis of my politics lies in the proposition that the Untouchables are not a sub-division or sub-section of Hindus, and that they are a separate and distinct element in the national life of India." Bodhisatta Babasaheb B.R.Ambedkar
"My social philosophy may be said to be enshrined in three words: liberty, equality and fraternity. My philosophy has roots in religion and not in political science. I have derived them from the teachings of my master, the Buddha." Bodhisatta Babasaheb B.R.Ambedkar
