Yask Muni who was philosopher of Vedas and Yoga says in his Shatpath Brahmin Granth 13/1/6, "RASHTRAM WA ASHWAMEDHAH" i.e., meaning of Ashwamedh is Rashtra i.e., nation. So to perform Yajna for the benefit of the nation is called ashwamedhaha and the king who rules over the public and does justice and performs Ashwamedh Yaj, he is true king. So here ashwa means Yajna and not horse. Because there is no place of violence in Yajna.
So purpose to perform Ashwamedh Yaj by a king is to look after his public well and is to give peace and fearless atmosphere. Process is mentioned in the book named, "YAJ KARAM SARVSHRESHTHA ISHWAR POOJA". So dueto wrong/false meaning the public has left the yajna within past two to three thousand years or after Mahabhart war.

President Barack Obama delivers much-anticipated message to Muslim world from auditorium at Cairo University campus, 04 Jun 2009 |
U.S. President Barack Obama says it is time for a new beginning in relations between America and the world's Muslims. The president said they should unite to confront violent extremism and promote the cause of peace.
Fresh start
President Obama says, after decades of frustration and distrust, it is time for candor ... for dialogue ... and a fresh start.
"I have come here to Cairo to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect, and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive, and need not be in competition," the president said.
Seeking common ground
He spoke in a packed auditorium on the sprawling campus of Cairo University. But his intended audience was far broader: more than one-billion Muslims around the world.
"I am convinced that in order to move forward we must say openly to each other the things we hold in our hearts, and that too often are said only behind closed doors," President Obama said. "There must be a sustained effort to listen to each other, to learn from each other, to respect one another, and to seek common ground."
The president spoke of his own perspective as a Christian with Muslim relatives who spent part of his youth in predominantly Muslim Indonesia.
"That experience guides my conviction that partnership between America and Islam must be based on what Islam is, not what it is not," he said. " And I consider it part of my responsibility as President of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear."
Hatred of a few
President Obama said problems must be dealt with through partnership, and tensions must be faced head on.
He said extremists are playing on their differences, and are killing people in many countries of many faiths.
"The enduring faith of over a billion people is so much bigger than the narrow hatred of a few," President Obama said. "Islam is not part of the problem in combating violent extremism, it is an important part of promoting peace."
Eliminate friction
The president said it is important to talk directly about all the issues that have created frictions in the past, from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
"If we see this conflict only from one side or the other, then we will be blind to the truth: the only resolution is for the aspirations of both sides to be met through two states, where Israelis and Palestinians each live in peace and security," he said.
Israeli-Palestinian conflict
President Obama said the Palestinians must renounce violence, and Israel must cease settlement activity. He said all sides must look honestly and openly at the reality of the situation.
"Privately, many Muslims recognize that Israel will not go away," the president said. "Likewise, many Israelis recognize the need for a Palestinian state. It is time for us to act on what everyone knows to be true."
Nuclear proliferation
The president also spoke of the need to work together to curtail the spread of nuclear weapons, making specific mention of Iran's nuclear ambitions.
And he spoke bluntly of the need to promote democracy, religious freedom, and women's rights.
"I reject the view of some in the West that a woman who chooses to cover her hair is somehow less equal, but I do believe that a woman who is denied an education is denied equality," President Obama said.
Before the speech, Mr. Obama met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and visited a mosque. After the address, he headed to the outskirts of the city to see the pyramids - a nod to the Egyptian capital's long history at the heart of the Arab world.

"On the issues that are in the national interest, BJP will strongly (stand) behind the government in the first 100 days," Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley said in the Rajya Sabha.
Participating in the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's Address to Parliament, Jaitley said the areas in which the government would get support from the BJP include high economic growth, low inflation and the right to food security.
The party which got a drubbing in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections, said the 'zero tolerance' phrase was coined by it and that the government would get its backing on securing the country. The BJP was also for one-rank-one pension for the armed forces, he said.
Jaitley said if the Opposition supported the government on Women's Reservation Bill, the "credibility of Indian polity" would be enhanced.
However, the newly-elected Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said there would be several areas where his party would "fiercely" oppose the government. In certain areas, it would "caution the government".

President Obama speaks to Muslims in Cairo, 4 Jun 2009 |
From the Gaza Strip to Kabul to Washington, D.C., the world held its breath as President Obama made his historic speech to the Muslim world. "I've come here to Cairo to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world," he said.
The most anticipated topic was the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On this issue, Mr. Obama was clear. "The only resolution is for the aspirations of both sides through two states where Israelis and Palestians live in peace and security," he said.
Around 30 stocks in BSE-500 category, which contribute over 90% of the total market capitalisation, have risen over 100% in fourteen trading sessions. Almost 72 stocks have given a return of between 75 and 100%, while 138 stocks have appreciated between 50 and 75%.
Majority of the stocks that have appreciated over 100% belong to sectors like infrastructure, realty and finance. Most investors have lapped up these stocks on hopes that the government will further initiate reforms in financial sector and will increase its spending on infrastructure to counter the adverse affects of global slowdown. "Majority of the stocks in infrastructure and realty segments were at depressed valuation before the election results were announced. Now, with the government focused on reviving the economy, huge fund flows have been diverted to these segments," said Amitabh Chakraborty, head, equity, Religare Securities.
The Sensex has risen over 23% from 12,173 points to 15,008 points since May 15 as the FIIs have turned net buyers in the markets. FIIs have pumped in around Rs 12,400 crore in the equity market in last fourteen trading sessions. Though there is enough liquidity in the markets and huge funds are waiting on the sidelines, most market pundits feel that there might be a correction in frontline stocks as their have now become stretched.
Marc Lhermitte, Partner at Ernst & Young and author of the report said, "The primacy of long-established centres in the developed world, including Europe's capitals, is being challenged by emerging Asian cities such as Shanghai and Bangalore and by regional cities acquiring international expertise.
"When business leaders from our study were asked where the next Google or Microsoft will emerge, Shanghai and Mumbai were seen as the more credible alternatives than New York and Silicon Valley, or London."
Ernst & Young's study analyses both actual inward investment over the last 12 months and attitudes of global investors on their plans over the short to medium terms.
Retaining its ranking as the most attractive European location for FDI, the UK attracted 686 investment projects in 2008, 4 per cent less than in 2007. The 686 investments created 20, 000 jobs, ranking the UK as the number one location for FDI job creation in Europe.
Lhermitte added, "The BRIC regions (Brazil, Russia, India, China) are not providing the absolutely safe ground international investors are looking for. Europe is seen as predictable and safe."
"Investors are showing greater loyalty to their countries of origin and historical markets, launching fewer projects in Emerging Europe. And that's why, for the moment, at least they'd sooner stay at home than venture abroad."
However, the Supreme Court issued notice to the Maharashtra government on another plea of Mumbai SEZ Ltd (MSEZ) seeking transfer of its petition pending before the Bombay high court.
Earlier senior counsel Shanti Bhushan, appearing for the MSEZ, sought the stay on the land acquisition proceedings initiated by notifications under Sections 4 and 6 on the grounds that if the acquisition is not completed by June 8, the entire process would lapse under the Land Acquisition Act, 1894.
A stay would have made the deadline redundant. The Bombay high court on May 22 had asked the MSEZ to move the Supreme Court for expediting land acquisition as various public interest petitions pertaining to the issue were pending before the apex court.
Addressing a joint session of Parliament, the President said, "My government's effort will be to create a slum free India in five years through the Rajiv Awas Yojana."
The scheme will extend financial support under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to states "that are willing to assign property rights" to people living in slums.
Patil said the existing schemes for affordable housing, including interest subsidy offer, would be dovetailed into the Rajiv Awas Yojana to make it a pilot project on affordable housing for urban poor.
"The scheme for affordable housing through partnership and the scheme for interest subsidy for urban housing would be dovetailed into the Rajiv Awas Yojana which will extend support under JNNURM to states that are willing to assign property rights to people living in slum areas," the President said.
"Over 15 lakh houses are under construction for the urban poor. There is a need to focus urban housing programmes on the poor living in slums," Patil added.
"Cleaner production and renewable energy as well as resource- and energy-efficient technologies are set to change forever the relationship we have with our global commons," he added.
NGOs and environmentalists working in the Sunderbans, however, apprehended otherwise.
But what about deer and wild boars? In all likelihood they were affected," Mr. Chatterjee said.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presents a bouquet to Congress party president Sonia Gandhi after his party's victory in the elections |
May 22, Manmohan Singh took the oath of office as prime minister of India for a second term after his Congress Party's victory in India's 15th parliamentary election. He is the first prime minister since India's independence leader, Jawaharlal Nehru, to be re-elected after serving a full five-year term.
India's election has broad implications for U.S.-India relations. India sealed a landmark nuclear deal with the United States last year that transformed ties between the world's two largest democracies. But the Communist parties supporting the Congress government in India's last parliament led an extended drive to obstruct the agreement. Finally, they withdrew their support and the government survived with only the support of other regional parties, and the U.S.-India agreement was approved by India's parliament.
In the recent election campaign, an Indian Communist party went to the extent of expressing its intention to revise the civilian nuclear deal with the United States if the party gained sufficient influence after elections. But the communists were routed in the elections.
Michael Barone is an American political analyst and journalist. He is a regular commentator on United States elections and political trends |
"That is one of the messages I take from the verdict of the voters of India," he said. "They gave an increased support to Congress party and its coalition which has nearly a majority by itself to govern without the Communists. My understanding is that much of the rhetoric in the campaign by the Communists on the left and by the BJP was to the effect that Congress and Prime Minister Singh was too close to the United States. And I think increase in support of the prime minister's party is an indication that most Indian voters were not of that view, and that they welcome a closer relationship with the United States."
The Congress Party's showing vindicates the prime minister's efforts to deepen a strategic partnership with the United States at a time when the Obama administration is concerned about security in the region, chiefly in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
In his congratulatory message to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, President Obama reiterated that the U.S. would work to "enhance the warm partnership between our two countries". However, Michael Barone thinks the elections in India are more important to Americans than most of us realize, including perhaps, Mr. Obama.
"I think President Obama has not paid as much attention to them [India] as I would like to have seen up to this point, but now that India has voted, it provides a good opportunity for him to do so," he said. "I know Secretary of State Hillary Clinton played a constructive role in her husband's outreach to India when he was president in the 1990s. I think she knows the issue."
Dr. Satish Kumar is one of the most eminent Indian scholars in the field of International Relations. He is Editor of India's National Security Annual Review |
"Well, I hope they would pay attention, and I think, they will eventually, when they settle down with some of the more pressing problems which they perceive," he said. "And the most pressing problem in their mind is the question of the militancy in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region. That, in any case, can be handled by the US Administration independently of and in addition to building a very strong and strategic relationship with India."
Satish Kumar says India's ruling Congress Party will be as much committed to intensifying the strategic partnership with the United States as it was previously.
"Now that the governments in both the countries are more or less settled down, therefore one would expect that there should be no further delay and the U.S. government should come forward and carry forward the process of cooperation in high technology and various other areas with India," he said.
Commentator and political analyst Michael Barone says the United States and India, both have electoral democracies, share strategic interests and moral principles, and are prime targets of Islamist extremists. He says the 700 million voters of India have chosen to be U.S. allies, and the United States should take them up on it.

In Jerusalem, Israel's government expressed optimism, even though Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not endorsed the idea of a Palestinian state. "Israel shares the hope expressed by President Obama that his efforts will indeed lead to a new period of peace and reconciliation in the Middle East. a period where Israel will be recognized as a Jewish state and that we can live without fear of violence and terrorism," said government spokesman Mark Regev.

BJP set to postmortem 2009 LS poll defeat

Kanpur After the BJP's third consecutive defeat from the Kanpur Lok Sabha constituency, some fireworks are expected in the party's review-cum-planning meeting scheduled for June 6.
Om Prakash Singh, the party leader in state assembly, will interact with district committee members and partymen to figure out the reasons behind the defeat.
In 2004, BJP lost the seat by a margin of 5,000 plus votes. The margin increased to 18,906 votes in the 2009 LS elections, even though the party fielded a stronger candidate.
Satyadeo Pachauri who won from Arya Nagar assembly seat in 1996 was the party's Lok Sabha candidate in 2004. In 2009, five-time sitting MLA from Cantt assembly segment, Satish Mahana, was the party candidate. District General Secretary Surendra Maithani said: "Over 150 senior party members, including members of district and working committees, youth wings, party candidates in 2007 assembly election and former district presidents have been called for Saturday's meeting." He pointed out that the defeat has become a serious issue, as Kanpur was previously a BJP stronghold. "From 1991 to 1999, we won the seat thrice, but thereafter, have tasted three successive defeats from Congress," remarked Maithani. He claimed that the review meeting will last for over four hours and will cover the smallest detail like number of votes polled on each booth. "The state committee has identified 24 Lok Sabha seats of UP, where the BJP has lost by a margin of less than 20,000 votes and Kanpur is one of them," said Maithani.
Though the senior district members remained silent on the differences within the party cadre, the issue is likely to crop up in the Saturday meeting. "We have to rectify our mistakes and ensure that we will win on all five assembly seats of Kanpur in the next state elections," he added. ens
Party gears up for by-polls
The BJP has appointed observers for all the 12 Assembly constituencies where by-elections will be held soon. The party has asked the observers to visit the constituencies and get feedback. The seats are Malihabad, Lucknow West, Kolasla, Morna, Jhansi, Padrauna, Mughalsarai, Rari, Bharthana, Bidhuna, Moradabad West and Powayan.

Cairo Speech Said to Signal Increased Funding of Democracy Programs
Washington, DC 05 June 2009 |
US President Barack Obama's intent to deepen engagement in the Middle East is being described as a bold departure from his immediate predecessors. But to measure how his broad suggestions of finding commonality with the Muslim world, practicing religious tolerance, and curbing extremism get translated into action represent as great a test for US diplomacy as President Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China. That's how executive director Andrew Albertson of the Washington-based Project on Middle East Democracy described the challenge of Thursday's speech at Cairo University.
U.S. President Barack Obama, left, is greeted during a welcoming ceremony by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak at the Qubba Palace in Cairo, 04 June 2009 |
"I think that President Obama, by going to Cairo, by speaking directly to people, around the filters of state-controlled media, was the first step in his opening for resetting and recasting that relationship with the Muslim and Arab world. It was a pretty bold diplomatic move, something along the lines of Nixon going to China. That was the great strategic challenge for the US at that time, a country that we had very difficult relations with," he recalled.
Mr. Obama's speech in Cairo enabled him to reach citizens by going around their governments and offering his audience a new beginning, provided the peoples of the Middle East are willing to work together to repair a history of what the president described as fear and mistrust. Albertson says the direct approach was a skillful act of good diplomacy.
"We have really good relationships with the governments in the Middle East, with maybe the exception of Syria. But we don't have a really good relationship with the people of the region, and for too long, we've allowed ourselves to be wedged away from Muslims and Arabs. And I think this was a necessary and a very important, and a very prudent, well-thought-out strategic opening," he maintained.
Albertson said that last week, the Obama administration's budget request submitted to Congress for next year signaled large increases in programs supporting democracy and human rights activities across the Middle East.
"We saw steady or increased numbers in almost every country in the region – big increases for two major aid instruments, the Middle East Partner Initiative and the Millennium Challenge Corporation. The only exception, and this is kind of an odd exception, given the President's speech in Cairo, was a big cut for democracy activists and governing schools in Egypt," he pointed out.
In laying the groundwork for a renewal of scholarships and exchange programs and people-to-people dialogues, Albertson said Mr. Obama had outlined the first steps that could be taken to build greater trust and understanding. While acknowledging that cultural differences and large political disagreements continue to exist, Albertson said "the president didn't shy away from those differences," and his willingness to talk openly about them could help bridge the gap of suspicion.
"I think when you're honest, people respect that, even if they don't necessarily like everything that the president might have said. And that lays a good groundwork for saying some other things. To those who have criticized him for, I guess, reaching out too far, to Muslims I would just point out the incredible strategic importance of making this kind of effort, and I think it's ultimately going to pay dividends," said Albertson.
As for the best way to calibrate how President Obama's words Thursday in Cairo ultimately get translated into action, Albertson suggests that the high stakes in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the president's ability to win agreement on halting Israeli settlement expansion is one benchmark.
He also says that the increased US support for democracy activists, human rights, and governance-related goals in Middle Eastern countries will help indicate how successful Mr. Obama's vision will turn out to be. This is true, particularly in Egypt, which Albertson argues is not currently being targeted by the president or his secretary of state for political reform.
Cairo University |
"One of the real tests that the Obama administration has to grapple with right away, and it's going to be a test of their seriousness on these goals that they laid out, is whether the US will continue to support democracy activists and reform goals in Egypt," he observed.
Albertson says that next year's US budget request for democracy activists and government reform goals in Egypt shows a decline of 60 percent. But he says he is hopeful that the president's selection of Cairo as the venue for such an important speech this week will help set the tone for achieving meaningful progress and demonstrate Washington's dedication to carrying out its intentions.
Security has been beefed up at major hospitals and crowded places including railway and bus stations in the city, City Police Commissioner B Prasada Rao said.
The police have already taken up checking and frisking operations in different localities in the city here in view of the IB inputs, he said.
Urging people to inform the police if they found any suspicious stranger not able to speak native language, the Commissioner issued instructions to the policemen to be vigilant.
Rao also requested owners of the lodges and hotels to keep a watch on the movement of their customers and ascertain their identity.
Three terrorists, in the age group of 30 years, have entered the country and planning to strike in south Indian cities, according to IB sources.
New York (PTI): Pressing for an "independent international inquiry" into the violence against civilians in the Sri Lankan conflict, UN's top human rights official Navi Pillay has said there should be "accountability for human rights violations" committed by all sides.
Highlighting the suffering of civilians caught up in armed conflicts, Pillay said there should be "unfettered humanitarian access to as well as freedom of movement for," the displaced persons held in closed camps in northern Sri Lanka.
"A comprehensive process of accountability for human rights violations committed by all sides should be carried out," said Ms. Pillay, the UN High Commisioner for Human Rights.
"To that end, I have called for an independent international inquiry," she said.
Contending that the condition of civilians in armed conflicts is a cause of "grave alarm," Ms. Pillay asked the Human Rights Council to protect the vulnerable group.
Citing 11 countries where fighting is having a serious negative impact on lives of civilians, she said: "A neglect of basic human rights, as well as discriminatory practices are often to be found at roots of such conflicts".
In Afghanistan, for instance, there was concern "over the continuing high rate of civilian casualties in the context of the deteriorating security situation," she told the Geneva-based Council.
She said anti-government elements remain responsible for largest proportion of conflict-related civilian casualties, mostly from suicide attacks, improvised explosive devices and targeted killings, including those of high-profile women.
"Civilians continue to be killed by pro-government forces as well, particularly in the context of air strikes," she said.
On Afghanistan, she said, the government of the country and states involved in the conflict should ensure independent investigation of all civilian casualties, as well as justice and remedies for the victims.
The High Commissioner also briefed the Council on conditions in Pakistan, Iraq, the occupied Palestinian territory, Colombia, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Chad and Nepal.
Continuing its 11th session, the 47-member Council also discussed women's human rights.
Opening the discussion, Ms. Pillay, said there is a "wide gulf" between international human rights treaties prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex, and their implementation.
"When race, religion, ethnicity, poverty, disability, social status, and other forms of discrimination were factored in," she said, "the picture was one of even greater disparity".

"After the cyclone struck the Sunderbans, the Border Security Force (BSF) had to concentrate more on relief work, leaving the international border unprotected at some places. And the Bangladeshi robbers took that opportunity. They came in hordes from across the border on the pretext of supplying drinking water to the cyclone victims and started plundering the homes of the hapless villagers," said Basirhat subdivisional police officer Debashis Dhar. "We have already talked to the BSF about this and intensified patrolling in the area," the SDPO added.
A senior officer of South 24-Parganas police, too, admitted that incidents of robbery has increased in the region in the past few days. Some places are just 50 km from Kolkata. "Many of the robbers came from across the international border. Some are, however, Indians, who have lost all their belongings to the cyclone and taken to crime out of desperation," he added.
Biren Das, Khodeja Bibi and Gobindo Mondol agreed to what the police officers said. They, too, have lost everything and have been staying on the road for the last 10 days. They have got little relief from the panchayat and even the cars carrying relief workers and trucks full of relief materials zoom past their tarpaulin huts towards Sonakhali. And even if these roadside cyclone victims shout their lungs out, most of the trucks don't even bother to stop, fearing road robbery.
"Yes, we are scared of stopping on our way to Gatkhali or Sonakhali. We have heard about several cases of robbery on the Basanti Highway," says Shamik Bhattacharya, a relief worker who has been shuttling between Kolkata and the Aila-ravaged Sunderbans for the past few days, said.
Biren Das, who is now staying at a tarpaulin shack at Rajbari under Sandeshkhali police station, said, "The robbers come on small country boats and take away whatever they can lay their hands on rice, dal, aluminium utensils and even wooden cots. These armed gangs come in the night, from places like Baro Rajgara, Chhoto Rajgara and Laukhali. A few of them might even be coming from Bangladesh, who knows?" Recently a teacher's house was also robbed at Bamangheri by boat-borne dacoits, Das added.
Reports of a spurt in robbery also came in from Sundarikhali near Saraberia (under Sandeshkhali police station). Khodeja Bibi, a shack dweller, said there have been several incidents of dacoity in the past few days. Robbers struck a house in the Tangramari village on Wednesday night. Even the homeless have formed several groups and patrolling the area to prevent the dacoits, said Gobindo Mondal, himself a homeless.
U.S. President Barack Obama is calling on Israel to stop construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank. In a speech at Cairo University, Mr. Obama says the building of settlements is undermining efforts to achieve peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Mr. Obama's latest remarks highlight a growing rift between Israel and the United States.
President Obama used unusually blunt language in calling on the Israeli government to stop expanding Jewish settlements in the West Bank.
"The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements," said President Obama. "This construction violates previous agreements and undermines efforts to achieve peace. It is time for these settlements to stop."
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (l) with President Barack Obama at the White House, 18 May 2009 |
Since then top administration officials, such as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, have used increasingly strong language to describe the president's policy.
"With respect to settlements, the president was very clear when Prime Minister Netanyahu was here," said Secretary Clinton. "He wants to see a stop to settlements - not some settlements, not outposts, not natural growth exceptions."
Nearly 300,000 Israelis live in about 120 Jewish settlements in the West Bank, among a Palestinian population of about 2.5 million. Many countries consider the settlements a violation of international law.
Despite the unusual U.S. pressure, Mr. Netanyahu says construction will continue in existing settlements to accommodate what the Israeli government calls "natural growth." The Israeli prime minister calls U.S. demands "unreasonable."
Israeli Cabinet Minister Benny Begin, who refers to the West Bank by its biblical name - Judea and Samaria, calls natural growth a legitimate reason for settlement building there.
"It applies the right of the Jewish people to its homeland, not only near Tel Aviv and Haifa, but also in the cradle of our history, in Samaria and in Judea," said Benny Begin.
President Obama is also at odds with Mr. Netanyahu over the ultimate solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"The only resolution is for the aspirations of both sides to be met through two states, where Israelis and Palestinians each live in peace and security," said Mr. Obama.
Although Mr. Netanyahu says he is prepared to resume peace talks with the Palestinians, he pointedly stops short of endorsing Palestinian statehood.
Philip Wilcox, the president of the Foundation for Middle East Peace and a former U.S. Consul General in Jerusalem, says the basic policy differences between America and Israel are clear.
"The Netanyahu visit did not accomplish what the president had hoped," said Philip Wilcox. "The prime minister was quite firm in saying no to both of the president's requests, support for two-state peace and a freeze on Israeli settlements."
Presidents Barack Obama (r) and Mahmoud Abbas at the White House, 28 May 2009 |
Ghaith al-Omari, a former top aide to the Palestinian president who is now with the American Task Force on Palestine, says the Obama administration is seeking concessions from the Israelis in an effort to increase Palestinian support for Mr. Abbas.
"They understand that Abbas needs a political deliverable," said Ghaith al-Omari. "They understand that Abbas' popularity is very much linked to the credibility of the peace process. Unless he can go to his own public and say that I have delivered something political, leading us towards liberation, he will continue to be weak no matter how much money we pump into the West Bank. So I think the first dimension is to strengthen Abbas politically and this is where I see the settlement freeze fitting very nicely."
The Israeli government says it will not build any new settlements and will remove small Jewish outposts in the West Bank.
M.J. Rosenberg, the director of policy analysis for the Israel Policy Forum, says Mr. Obama's demand for a settlement freeze is a strong signal that America wants to be perceived as an honest broker in the peace process.
"I mean right now there is a crisis, Israelis perceive it as a crisis, in U.S.-Israel relations over a settlements freeze and I think most Israelis are saying what, is that still around," said Rosenberg. "They do not even think about settlers. And when they think about the settlers they do not think about them in a positive way. In theory, in theory, it should not be that hard for a friendly American president who is pro-Israel, as Obama is, to make the case that dealing with this question and dealing with the settlers is in everyone's best interest."
Palestinian officials say they will not resume peace talks with Israel until the Netanyahu government agrees to a total freeze on construction in the settlements.
Ghaith al-Omari says he expects the Obama administration to remain firm on the issue.
"My own impression is that I see a seriousness that we haven't seen for a long time from the administration," he said. "I see diplomatic skill we have not seen for a while. I think the positions have been staked. The upcoming period is a period of seeing how good and how skillful U.S. diplomacy is."
Secretary of State Clinton says the Obama administration will soon present what she calls very specific proposals to Israel and the Palestinians on how to achieve a two-state solution to their conflict.
The U.S. is also expected to ask Arab states in the region for confidence-building steps with Israel to improve the atmosphere for negotiations.
Tens of Thousands Rally in Hong Kong Against 1989 Tiananmen Crackdown
04 June 2009 |
Tens of thousands of Hong Kong residents have joined a vigil marking China's 1989 crackdown on protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, while Beijing police smothered the square to prevent similar memorials. Tens of thousands attend candlelight vigil at Hong Kong's Victoria park, 04 Jun 2009, to mark anniversary of Tiananmen Square crackdown
Organizers of Thursday's vigil said more than 200,000 people gathered in and around Hong Kong's Victoria Park to mark the 20th anniversary of the June 4 crackdown. It was the largest turnout at the annual vigil since it began in 1990.
Police estimated the number of people inside the park at about 63,000. Hong Kong is a former British colony that has retained its freedoms since reverting to Chinese rule in 1997. It is the only part of China that permits commemorations of the 1989 crackdown.
Beijing authorities kept Tiananmen Square open to visitors Thursday, but uniformed and plain-clothed security agents blanketed the area and no acts of protest were reported.
Participants at the Hong Kong vigil turned the park into a sea of candles as they called on Beijing to reverse its classification of the 1989 protests as a "counterrevolutionary rebellion."
The huge crowd listened to audio recordings of the late former Communist Party chief Zhao Ziyang, who sided with the 1989 demonstrators. The vigil also featured a rare appearance by a former student leader of the protests, Xiong Yan.
Hong Kong authorities barred other June 4 dissidents from entering the territory ahead of the anniversary.
Washington urged China Wednesday to account for the hundreds of people who were killed or went missing when it sent tanks and troops into the square in 1989 to crush pro-democracy protests.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qing Gang expressed "strong dissatisfaction" with the U.S. demand, accusing Washington of making "groundless accusations" against Beijing. Qin Gang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman (File)
Qin told reporters Thursday the Chinese government already has reached firm conclusions regarding what its calls the "June 4 incident."
In addition to stepping up security, China forced several leading Chinese dissidents to leave Beijing and confined others to their homes.
Beijing also blocked foreign media reports and social networking Internet sites such as Twitter, in an apparent attempt to prevent discussion of the Tiananmen anniversary.
UN Rights Chief Navi Pillay Raises Alarm Over Civilian Deaths in Sri Lankan War
Geneva 04 June 2009 |
Navi Pillay (April 2009 file photo) |
The top U.N. human-rights official, Navi Pillay, says civilians suffer the most in all armed conflicts. She says the neglect of basic human rights, as well as discriminatory practices, often are at the root of armed conflict. And, that is why, she says, it is crucial to uphold the human rights of the victims.
She says it is important to get to the truth, to have independent human-rights monitors and the media present in situations of conflict. But, she notes independent observers were not able to access either the conflict zone or the camps for displaced people in northern Sri Lanka.
The government has been accused of using heavy weaponry in a so-called civilian safe zone and the Tamil rebels of using civilians as human shields.
But since there were no witnesses to what was happening, Pillay says it is hard to corroborate these allegations.
"A comprehensive process of accountability for human-rights violations committed by all sides should be carried out," Pillay said. "To that end, I have called for an independent international inquiry. On June 2nd, speaking before this Council, the Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights of Sri Lanka stated that his government is committed to a reconciliation scheme. This commitment is welcome."
Pillay says she believes accountability is a prerequisite for the attainment of justice and reconciliation for all Sri Lankans and a foundation for lasting peace.
At the end of May, the U.N. Human Rights Council held a special session on the human-rights situation in Sri Lanka. The high commissioner's plea for an international investigation went unheeded.
Turning her attention to other areas of concern, High Commissioner Pillay highlights the grave situation of civilians caught in conflict in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, the Palestinian Territories and Colombia.
She notes the terrible impact fighting in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, is having on civilians, aid workers, human-rights defenders and journalists.
"During the past weeks, many civilians were killed, hundreds injured and thousands displaced by clashes between pro and anti-government forces in Mogadishu," she said. "Women are particularly at risk of violent attacks for which they have no effective recourse. The fighting must be stopped. Countering impunity of perpetrators for their past and current atrocities must be a priority in order to achieve justice and deter further violations."
Pillay expresses her outrage at the lack of justice and horrific levels of sexual attacks in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She deplores the treatment of human-rights defenders, humanitarian workers and U.N. national staff In Sudan's conflict-ridden Darfur Province. She says the workers are subject to arbitrary arrests, detentions, ill treatment and torture.
The U.N. official says the recent clashes between the Chadian rebels and government forces have added to the widespread violations and abuses by both parties in the country.
Indian Students Claim Epidemic of Racist Violence in Australia
Sydney 04 June 2009 |
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd (File) |
A series of assaults on Indian students in Australia prompted about 3,000 people to take part in a recent rally in Melbourne to demand greater protection from the authorities, who are accused of doing too little to stem the violence.
There were ugly clashes between protesters and police. More than a dozen people were arrested.
Indian High Commissioner to Australia Sujatha Singh says many young expatriates are furious that their concerns have not been properly addressed.
"Our Indian communities overseas are law abiding. They go by the rules and, if they're being provoked into this [protests], it is because they have very real concerns," said Singh.
Activists of Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party protest near Australian Embassy in New Delhi, India, 04 Jun 2009 |
The latest victim of the violence - a 25-year-old Indian student - is in a critical condition after being stabbed with a screwdriver by intruders at a birthday party.
His friend, Srinivas Vedantam, insists the attack was carried out by racist thugs.
"When they entered the party and they started abusing - using the racial abuses, like 'You black Indians,' like that stuff. So it ended up with a racial attack," said Vedantam.
However, senior police officers doubt that the violence directed toward the Indian community in Australia is exclusively motivated by racial prejudice.
Victoria Police Chief Simon Overland insists that students, in general, have become "easy targets" for opportunistic criminals.
"It's partly violence against Indian students," he said. "It's escalating robberies and we have used the term 'soft-target robberies.' Now, the Indian students have taken that as referring directly to them; it's not. What we have seen is that robberies are now happening more directed against people in the street, directed against people who are wandering around with laptop computers, mobile phones, iPods, cash. And, if they're alone, they're vulnerable."
The attacks have caused diplomatic friction between Canberra and New Delhi.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has publicly reassured the Indian government that Australia is not a racist country and says he was appalled by the assaults.
"These are senseless acts of violence. Those who carry out these attacks stand condemned," he said.
In response, the Rudd government has set up a special task force to deal with the violence.
The new unit will be lead by a former chief of Australia's Special Forces, Duncan Lewis, who is one of the government's most-senior national security advisers.
Officials in Victoria also want those convicted of racially-motivated offenses to be given more severe punishments.
Victoria Attorney General Rob Hulls says judges should take bigotry into account when passing sentence.
"We want to send a message that any crime that's committed purely based on hatred or prejudice against a group of people is not to be tolerated, but it ought be something that is taken into account in the sentencing principles in this state," he said.
But some Indian students, like Jayasanker Bagiepalli, are too fearful to remain in Australia and are heading home.
"See what happens here? We are being attacked. Not once, twice. Many people, many Indians are being attacked. That's what happens here. So if this country, you know, people from India really stops coming here. My parents doesn't (sic) want me to stay here," said Bagiepalli,
About 90,000 Indian students are living in Australia. They generate millions of dollars for the national economy, each year.
The Australian wave of violence has made headline news across India.
Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan has rejected an honorary doctorate from a university in Queensland to protest the assaults on Indian students in Australia.

1. Cow :- Hindus do not eat meat or slaughter Cows. God in Vedas has ordered human beings not to eat kill animals until they have turned ferocious and attack human beings. The tradition of shikar is to hunt ferocious animals who are posing threat to human beings, and have turned man eater. But present day people go for shikar and kill animals for pleasure. As souls get bodies of different animals bird, man, women etc as per deeds it performs. A soul is neither male nor female, it is genderless, it is indestructible. So to suffer from its deeds the body is given by the creator by killing others we are doing wrong. God in Vedas have told not to slaughter Cows especially as it is considered equivalent to brahma. So hindus do not kill cows and eat beef.
2. Creamation: Hindus burn the dead bodies in wooden pyre after death with veda mantras as per Vedas. This is the last sanskar to be performed for human body as per Vedas. This is called narmdehyajen. The ashes are immersed in flowing water. After thirteen days therahvee is to be kept . Now it is done as per the Vedas the explanation as per my Guruji I am giving:
In Atharvaveda mantra 8/8/11 'Yamdut' means = 'YAM' means God, and 'dut' means storm, cyclone, flood, earthquake, heavy rains, etc., etc., in mantra the air is Yam. So when a soul is to leave a body then by the power of God sutratma air enters the body and takes the soul out of it then goes to Savita, etc.
In 39th chapter of Yajurveda the process of this cremation is mentioned. This process is also called as "NARMEDH YAJYEN", "PURUSH MEDH YAJYEN" and "DAH KARAM" and "ANTEYESHATI KARAM". Atharvaveda mantra 10/8/26 says "YEH CHAKAR SAH JAJAR" means He (God) who makes the body, He destroys the same one day. Sense of Yajurveda mantra 39/5 is that when the soul leaves the body then the soul wanders in so many places, takes another body according to its previous deeds (karmas).
Yajurveda mantra 39/6 says that the soul after leaving the body first day goes to Savita (sun), second day agnihi (fire), third Vaayu (normal air), fourth Aditya, fifth chandrma (moon), sixth ritu (seasons), seventh marutah, eighth brihaspati (tiniest air), ninth mitrah (breathing), tenth varunah (udan air), eleventh indrah (electricity), twelfth Vishvedevah (in all divine qualities). Then, after wandering in sky, gets body according to previous deeds. So these twelve days are completed, then after 13 days the soul takes another body. Rigveda mandal 10 sukta 135 says that normally soul after getting body faces the result of its past lives' deeds and under influence of illusion (duly attracted towards illusion) does sins and again gets birth to face the sins. The soul is immortal and always separate from body. When an aspirant meets with a learned Acharya and gets spiritual education, then the fourth mantra says that the soul gets salvation
Mantra is APAANG PRAANGETI SWDHAYAA GRIBHITAH AMARTYO MARTYENAA SAYONIHI. TA SHASHVANTA VISHUCHINA VIYANTA NYA NYAM CHIKYURN NI CHIKYURNYAM.
Soul according to its good or bad (APANGETI) takes bodies of animals, birds, insects etc., and (PRANG) bodies of Rishis, Munis, i.e., (uuch Yoni) best bodies after leaving the present body, the soul (SWDHAYAA GRIBHITAH) duly attached with its own power of taking birth according to pious deeds and sins, enters other bodies (AMARTAYAH) though the soul is away from death being immortal but after death of bodies, takes new bodies. These ideas of Vedas has very well been mentioned in Bhagwat Geeta shlok 2/20 wherein Yogeshwar Shri Krishna says (AJO NITYAH SHASHWATOAYAM PURAANNO NA HANYTE HANYAMANNE SHARIRE ) i.e., the soul is (AJAH NITAYAH SHASHWATOH) never takes birth and is eternal (NAHANYATE HANAYMANNE SHARIRE) in fact after death of body too soul is never dead being immortal. (TASHASHVANTA) this process of death and birth of bodies and souls is eternal.
(VISHUCHINA VYANTA) soul and bodies goes far away to different directions [soul goes to Savita etc., {given below} according to Yajurveda chapter 39 and then takes birth and get another bodies and five elements of bodies goes to space and are mixed within air, fire etc., according to Yajurveda mantra 40/15] (ANYAM NICHIKYHU) many learned knows about this fact (ANYAM NICHIKYHU) another who are lack of knowledge of Vedas do not know the fact, i.e., we mostly know our body but not ourselves, i.e., soul. Death is sure i.e., the body will have to be cremated one day.
- Sanskar: Hindus especially Brahmins perform all the sanskar as per Vedas, as Vedas knowledge got limited to them in kaliyug. The sanskar as per Vedas to be performed for every soul taken birth as human beings are under the guidance of a learned Guru who knows Vedas because in every sanskar the havan is perforemed with Vedic mantras. These all were performed in Satyug, Dwapur, treta yuga and too by Shri Ram, Shri Krishna etc.
1. Garbhdhan Sanskar --- which is performed just after marriage and before pregnancy to have a good baby.
2. Punsvan sanskar ---which is peformed just after pregnancy of second or third month.
3. Seemantonnayan sanskar ---in 4th, 6th or in 8th month of pregnancy.
4. Jaatkaram Sanskar ---just after birth of a baby i.e., the same day.
5. Naamkaran sanskar ---after 101 days of birth in which name of the baby is announced.
6. Nishkraman sanskar--- when the mother and baby comes out of the house. In the 3rd or 4th month totravel or to go anywhere.
7. Annprasahn sanskar--- in the 6th month of the baby after birth on the same day of birth. In this sanskarthe baby is allowed to take solid food because up to 5th month baby had been taking milk/water only.
8. Churakaram sanskar i.e., Mundan sanskar---in the first or third year.
9. Karanvedh sanskar--- ear piercing ceremony.
10. Upnayan sanskar i.e., allowing baby to go school first time.
11. Vedaarambh sanskar i.e., to start study of Vedas in 6to 8 years.
12. Samavartan sanskar--- i.e., the baby has attained the knowledge of Vedas. It is performed in the age of fourteen years.13. Vivah sanskar i.e., marriage ceremony.
14. Vanprasth sanskar--- in the age of 51 plus.
15. Sanyas sanskar --- in the age of 75 plus or at any age when anyone becomes ascetic.
16. then the last, Anteshti sanskar when death comes. This sanskar is of dead body i.e., cremation - Aswamedh yajen: These yajen was performed by lord Krishna, rama etc and all great ancient kings as per Vedas. It does not mean horses are to be slaughtered as explained by Maxmuller and other western scholars and offered in yajen. It is a mistake to interpret Vedas as per words. It actually is :
Ideally the king must himself organize Yaj and more and more wherein he must sit to listen the Vedas, especially the subject, "how to rule", so that a strong, happy, rich and long live nation is built. So Ashwamedh means nation. Ashwamaed Yaj is performed by a strong king. The main benefit of the Yajyen is that it gives long-life to the entire nation. A horse also is prepared as a part of Yajyen (if done by the king) and is set to roam free. It showcases the power of the king. To challenge rule of a king one has to hold the horse. He has to protect the Ashwa, the horse.
In the Ashwamedh Yaj special Ved mantras are chanted in the Yaj and aahuti are offered. In the Ved mantras the prayer is done from the core of heart, that in the nation Brahmin, Kshatriye, Vaishya and Shudra are born to protect the nation well. Cow, bullock, horse and some strong character-full ladies, girls are born. Pious desires are fulfilled, timely rains occur, the public live long happy life. So the Ashwamedh Yaj is specially organised by the strong king for the benefit of the public. Mantras offered in Ashwamedh Yajyen will bring peace to the nation.
Ashwamedh Yaj which is the best Yaj, is organized by a strong king for the benefit of the Yaj/nation. However, you can organize Yaj for the peace in nation for three days, five days or seven days.
